During a year when pushing buttons became par for the discourse it s worth remembering that while every action may result in an equal and opposite reaction not all of those reactions have to produce a national outcry. Sometimes the reactions can make a difference--for all the right reasons. Take Debbie Zelman. When the mother of three talks about the Stage 4 cancer with which she was diagnosed at age 40 insidious cells deemed incurable at the time Zelman instinctively points to specific spots on her stomach. These are the buttons eight years ago that would prompt a call to benevolent action--the launch of Debbie s Dream the nation s first nonprofit dedicated to stomach cancer a disease that had barely registered a blip on the federal funding radar. That is until now. In large part due to the awareness that Debbie s Dream has raised in Washington D.C. the Department of Defense is donating 6 million toward stomach cancer research. Or take Heather Geronemus. When a car accident involving a drunk driver killed her father in 2009 members of Fort Lauderdale s Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) reached out and offered her support at a time when she most needed it. Not only would Geronemus pay it forward--establishing an annual fundraising walk run that has generated more than 1 million since 2011 to support MADD s local programs-- she pushed big-picture buttons on behalf of the organization advocating at local state and federal levels to strengthen drunk driving legislation. This month Lifestyle honors Geronemus Zelman and six other South Florida women for the selfless work they do in arenas ranging from health-related issues and the arts to animal welfare and children s programs. In addition to the spirit of the holidays that their respective volunteer efforts reflect the women we celebrate serve as a much-needed reminder that what distinguishes us as individuals--our passion our pain our triumphs our losses--also can bind us as part of a greater mosaic. One that when the right buttons are pushed can change lives for the better. From all of us at Lifestyle enjoy a safe and happy holiday season. SOLOMON Porsche hits on all cylinders with the Panamera a luxury sedan that looks and drives like a sports car--even in hybrid form The lowdown When Porsche introduced its four-door luxury sedan in 2009 it was lauded for being more spacious than its predecessors--but criticized for being too stodgy. For 2017 Porsche has styled its Panamera with sleeker lines that recall its classic 911 sports car. There s also a plug-in hybrid Panamera which combines an electric motor and a gas engine for lower fuel consumption. The details Porsche CEO Oliver Blume uses his Panamera 4S as a limousine--and why not The Panamera is sporty-sleek yet unlike the Porsche 911 S (another beauty of a car) it has a usable backseat--roomy enough for Blume to ride in style during the week for chauffeur-driven power lunches and down-toearth enough for family excursions on the weekend. Inside the Panamera has all the bells and whistles of a luxury four-door coupe including a new night-vision assistant which uses a thermal imaging camera to detect people and large animals. At the Paris Motor Show in September Porsche introduced the 4 E-Hybrid the fourth in the Panamera line. For those who want sports-car luxury but worry about a carbon footprint the hybrid soothes any pangs of guilt. Better still it has that Porsche get-up-and-go racing from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 173 mph impressive for a hybrid. Town Center at Boca Raton already is filled with equal parts holly and menorahs. Starbucks is transitioning from record pumpkin spice latte sales to peppermint mochas flying out the door (even though it s still around 90 degrees here). And you probably are in the thick of holiday shopping for your loved ones unless like me you re a type-A personality who s done by October. Perhaps you even closed out last month by engaging in a little Black Friday shopping which makes you my hero and also a little insane. Either way the stores are packed the lines are long and there s always that one toy craze sweeping the nation. (Someone please tell me what that is because I still don t know and I m scared of being reprimanded by my 7-year-old for not staying on trend.) Y If you do have children you also have brought out the reinforcements for a little parenting by proxy. You know the Elf on the Shelf or Mensch on the Bench who sees everything and keeps your kids in check just a little bit more. One thing we do in my house every holiday season is donate toys to children for the holidays. It s a good lesson in humility for our kids to show them that while they re tearing through presents there are many children who don t get to have that experience. You can help by purchasing new toys and finding a local charity such as Toys for Tots in Palm Beach County (west-palm-beach-fl. toysfortots.org). There s also an incredible organization run by a Boca Raton couple called The Inspire Hope Foundation. Each year they adopt children from the Florence Fuller Child Development Center in Boca and fulfill their holiday wish lists. It s selfless and incredible and you can get involved by visiting gofundme.com InspireHopeFL. Either way let s keep that spirit of giving alive and strong. It can be small like paying it forward in the Starbucks drive-through (secretly praying that the person behind you isn t on the office coffee run) or fulfilling a holiday wish list for a family in need. Whatever you choose do something kind this holiday season. It s contagious and we need more of it. Casual Elegance... It s impossible--unless you know where to go. Consider this our gift to you Farmer s Table (1901 N. Military Trail Boca Raton 561.417.5836) offers an organic-themed cocktail menu with indulgent libations that include ingredients grown on site. Health-conscious revelers can feel good about sipping the whiskey-based Fig & Froth the Spa-Day with cucumber vodka the Orchard Mule with ginger beer or the refreshing Strawberry-Jalape o Skinny Margarita. All are handcrafted--minus the artificial flavors colors preservatives high-fructose corn syrups gluten and trans fats found in typical cocktails. Instead the mixologists at Farmer s Market add flavor with sustainable plants and herbs picked from the restaurant s own organic garden. It s one of the most successful bar programs I ve ever seen from both the ease of execution to the tremendous guest response says Farmer s Table co-owner Joey Giannuzzi. The feedback has been stunning. Grab drinks at the bar on the outdoor patio or in a rustic-contemporary dining room decorated with funky bottle chandeliers and authentic barn-wood walls. There s also an innovative mocktail selection extensive wine list and farm-to-table menu with salads appetizers flatbreads entr es and desserts. SOLOMON David Gott remembers when he was in his early 20s fresh out of Northern Illinois University and working at Wolverine Worldwide a shoe company based in Pompano Beach. Out of curiosity he drove west to Sunrise to visit Sawgrass Mills during its opening weekend in 1990. I ll never forget the traffic and the chaos he says. If you would ve told Gott then that 26 years later he d be general manager of the 2.4 million-square-foot complex the largest outlet and value-retail shopping destination in the country that guy would not have believed you. Gott spent 19 years working for Sawgrass Mills operator Simon Property Group. With [that much] experience with the same company you ve done things great and you ve done things wrong he says. If you learn from it I think you get better and better. Most recently he served as general manager at Simon s Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg Illinois. Though Gott and his team are gearing up for the mad rush that happens from Black Friday through the end of December the busy season actually begins in August when we get our South American visitors who holiday in South Florida. Adding to the upcoming festivities The Colonnade Outlets will be decorated for the first time with lighted palm trees lights on the roof lines and holiday decor including a Christmas tree Hanukkah menorah and Nativity scene. We don t necessarily do the amount of decor that you ll find at our Dadeland property but we re sprucing things up at The Colonnade to make the experience feel a little special for the holidays. The whole Gator Garden between the Grand Lux Caf and Villagio will be lit up. The Colonnade fresh off the debut of a new 1 700-space parking garage near its outlets continues an ongoing expansion that includes 24 new stores. We re the only place in South Florida with Versace Tag Heuer Saint Laurent Prada and Gucci outlets he says. Meanwhile Manhattan icon and luxury discounter Century 21 will open a massive 85 000-square-foot store at Sawgrass Mills in early December its first location outside of the Northeast. Restaurant chain Matchbox based in Washington D.C. will open its first Florida location in December. That puts dining at both ends of The Colonnade for the first time he says. Three new restaurants will open in early 2017 in the expanded Oasis section-- Miami s Mojitobar Texas de Brazil steakhouse and Yard House the popular chain that serves more than 100 different beers. 22 DECEMBER 2016 LMGFL.COM An Elective MRI CT or PET Can quite possibly save your life. Not only did the first baseman hit .360 for the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 World Series against the Cleveland Indians--with three doubles and seven runs scored-- he also was on the receiving end of the throw that ended the longest championship drought in major North American sports. When Rizzo fielded the toss from third baseman Kris Bryant in the bottom of the 10th inning the groundout that ended an epic 8-7 victory in Game 7 it sealed the Cubs first World Series title in 108 years. The play touched off a celebration that for the Parkland resident shows no signs of letting up. It started with a parade down Chicago s Michigan Avenue an all-day party that marked perhaps the leastproductive work day in Windy City history. Then came a two-scene appearance on Saturday Night Live with fellow players David Ross and Dexter Fowler one where Rizzo played a stripper at a grandmother s surprise bachelorette party and a Weekend Update skit where he sang Go Cubs Go with former SNL cast member and die-hard Cubs fan Bill Murray. The 27-year-old then chatted up Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. Plus he made the cover of Sports Illustrated his excitement radiating off the page. It s been an unforgettable run for the three-time All-Star who is only eight years removed from another life-altering experience. In 2008 at age 18 Rizzo was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. No matter how bad he felt during treatments he knew he had to stay strong for those around him especially as his grandmother battled breast cancer at the same time. I believe that an individual does not battle cancer but rather the whole family does he wrote on the website for the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation the organization he and his family started after he went into remission that raises money for cancer research and supports children and their families fighting the disease. Rizzo who will be in Parkland Dec. 11 for his foundation s annual Walk-Off for Cancer 5K at Pine Trails Park spoke to Lifestyle about his whirlwind month. Was your family in Cleveland for Game 7 How did you celebrate that night My mom and dad were with me every game for the whole playoffs. My brother sister-in-law their son and my girlfriend were there in Cleveland. We popped Champagne on the roof of the clubhouse and took pictures with the trophy. Then all the families flew back with us on our team charter. That was a really good moment. Who was the first person from Parkland that you either spoke to or heard from after the game beyond family That s a tough one--I got so many text messages that I [had to catch] up on. My friend Jordan Brown is probably the first person I called I went to high school with him. Everyone couldn t believe it. The support I got from everyone back home has been amazing. is this only the beginning for this group of Cubs I hope so. I want to say this is only the beginning but it s so hard to do what we did. The competition in all sports like baseball is so good and not easy. But we should be contenders for years to come. Have you had time yet to process what this means to you personally given everything you ve been through For sure. It s really the ultimate dream to win the World Series. A lot of things happened along the way and to overcome cancer is the biggest obstacle of my life. I m grateful for it and when I look back and think about that and now where I am it s amazing. When people battling the disease talk to you what do you share with them about how you were able to stay so positive I make sure they know that the sun is still going to rise tomorrow. When you feel good enjoy your life. When you re feeling bad just know that there are better days ahead. ... I think [the Rizzo foundation] does a good job making people feel loved and that s important. A little love a little reaching out goes a long way for these kids and especially their families. How did you have the presence of mind to tuck the ball in your back pocket after the out that sealed the World Series It s a piece of history. If I throw my glove off that ball goes flying somewhere. In every replay I ve seen of every World Series since I was a kid a player has taken the ball and kept it. I put it in my pocket to celebrate. Do you think you ll ever have to buy a beer in Chicago or Parkland ever again Parkland It s a little more low-key [so maybe] I can go under the radar. Chicago I sure hope not. Meet Malia. The nation s largest nonprofit working to protect families from impaired drivers MADD also provides support to survivors and families whose lives have been altered by drivers under the influence. HER INVOLVEMENT A drunk driver killed Geronemus father in 2009 a few days before his 61st birthday (the driver was released from prison last year after serving time for DUI manslaughter). The reality is that two out of three people will be affected by a drunk driver in their lifetime. That s a huge number she says. MADD reached out and helped me at a time when no one else could I had to give back to this organization that had done so much for me. In 2011 Geronemus launched Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale a 5K walk run on the last Sunday of April that has raised more than 1 million since its inception--money that stays in Broward County to support the educational programs and victim services offered by MADD. QUOTE The stigma is that MADD is for people like me says Geronemus who works on the public relations team at Ultimate Software. The reality is that we re here for everybody. The organization has been behind all of the major laws that impact driving. This year we re pushing for ignition interlock laws for first-time offenders in Florida. That device has stopped more than 1 million car starts. Twenty-eight of 50 states have them. We re not one and we re the third-highest state for DUIs in the nation. We re also one of the only states that have fifth-time offenders for DUI that s because we don t have harsh punishments. These are the things that keep me up at night. DeMarzo RESIDENCE Coral Springs ORGANIZATION The Danielle DeMarzo Foundation. The nonprofit launched by DeMarzo her sister and her parents in 2000 offers resources and support to children facing growth-related disorders and individuals with special needs. HER INVOLVEMENT At age 4 DeMarzo was diagnosed with Turner syndrome a condition in girls that because of a missing X chromosome can stunt growth affect heart and kidney development and lead to an array of other health- and learning-related issues. According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders one in approximately 2 500 girls is born with the disorder. Thanks to her family s perseverance during an era when information about the syndrome was sparse and often outdated DeMarzo received the testing and treatments she needed (including growth hormones). Today standing just a fraction above 5 feet tall she is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist. QUOTE When I was growing up our family didn t have a lot of access to resources. It s said that during the founding father s first term in office one of the White House state dinners featured a dessert made with ice cream encased in hot pastry--a precursor for what with a few tweaks and the addition of meringue would become baked Alaska. More than two centuries later Shooters Waterfront (3033 NE 32nd Ave. 954.566.2855) in Fort Lauderdale contributed yet another chapter to the dessert s storied journey--one that Jefferson no doubt would find irresistible. In December 2014 director of operations Peter Lopez and the Shooters kitchen team added Key lime baked Alaska to the menu--an ode to the restaurant s Intracoastal backdrop and relaxed elegance. If you look at restaurants along the Intracoastal everybody has coconut shrimp everybody has mahi tacos and everybody has Key lime pie Lopez says. We wanted to do something different something more on the foodie side--but not so far off the charts that you wouldn t recognize it. Lopez also wanted to give diners a rich dessert experience at an affordable price. A similar creation at one of the finer restaurants in South Florida might command upward of 20. At Shooters it s 11. From the moment the dish debuted on the menu Shooters version of baked Alaska--with its spongy ladyfinger cake base Key limeflavored ice cream core inside frozen meringue that s shaped like a rose and the drizzle of coconut daiquiri sauce that tops it off--was a megahit. On any given day the restaurant sells between 40 and 60 of the desserts. We have ladies who come in and just order baked Alaska--and a bottle of Champagne Lopez says. As with any concoction with as many moving parts as this one there s more to Key lime baked Alaska than meets the eye. Lifestyle asked pastry chef Bella Taveras to weigh in on the details. 46 DECEMBER 2016 LMGFL.COM 2. Deep freeze Because the meringue melts so quickly we have to pipe it around the ice cream while working in the freezer. If you did it at room temperature the meringue would fall right off the ice cream mold. I start piping it from the top and 1. Cuckoo for coconuts The daiquiri sauce that s drizzled over the top (not pictured) is made with coconut rum coconut milk and simple syrup all mixed together Taveras says. It goes very nice with the tart elements--and the rum gives the dessert a touch of warmth. 3. Hidden surprise We add Key lime juice to our homemade ice cream and we pipe the ice cream right into molds that are placed in the freezer. It works out to about one gallon of ice cream split into 24 molds. We try not to make too much ice cream in advance because we want to keep it as fresh as possible. 6. Soak it up The is like a sponge cake it absorbs not only the daiquiri sauce but also the ice cream as it begins to melt Taveras says. The longer that you let it sit you notice the out even more. 5. A rose by any other name We use a drop of beet juice with the meringue to give the rose its elegant pink color. And then we lightly torch it to give it that contrast. 4. Sealed with a kiss The macaroons shaped like Hershey s Kisses that we plate the dessert with are dried meringue baked at 200 degrees. The size is important if we make them too big they break up. It gives the dessert a sweet crunch. And his modern American bistro-style Max s Grille the only original restaurant in Mizner Park is commemorating its 25th anniversary with interior renovations and innovative new menu items. The restaurant s longevity is an anomaly in South Florida renowned for its persnickety patrons. I am very proud says Max 71 a California transplant and partner co-founder of The Max 48 DECEMBER 2016 LMGFL.COM Opposite page Spinach and feta omelet. In addition to the 300-seat Max s Grille the group owns Max s Harvest and serves as restaurant consultant to Burger Bar in Palm Beach Gardens. Max is also a partner in Burt & Max s in Delray Beach along with restaurateur Burt Rapoport with whom he first worked back in the day. (Rapoport is also a partner in Max s Grille.) Max introduced South Floridians to California-style cuisine including the now-ubiquitous chopped salad in 1984. Before entering the restaurant business Max worked as a Wall Street stockbroker but he felt unfulfilled. I wanted to do something that positively affected people he says. I found my calling. And this restaurant is the embodiment of the dream I had as a younger man. He attributes the success of Max s Grille to a simple tried-and-true formula Provide a great location (check) impressive architecture (check) first-rate food (check) and a top-notch staff (check). Max was ahead of his time when he opened the Mizner Park eatery. Back in the day Boca Raton wasn t nearly as developed--Town Center had no Neiman Marcus Nordstrom or Macy s and many west Boca neighborhoods and east Boca condos had yet to be built. Today Mizner Park is flush with luxury stores and downtown commerce and condos. Opening there was a good decision says Max who was offered his choice of spots by developer Tom Crocker. The restaurant is located next to the center s valet parking--for which Max is responsible. They didn t provide valet at the time but we insisted. Max designed the restaurant for maximum appeal We can give everyone from every walk of life something they can enjoy. The eatery recently closed for 10 days for comprehensive renovations that included repainted ceiling soffits recovered banquettes upgraded patio furnishings a refreshed outdoor bar and a new kitchen. There are plans for new lighting and chairs and an indoor bar redesign to restore the bar overhang to its original look. He revealed the restaurant s revamp during an anniversary party where present and former staffers topped the invite list. We couldn t do what we do without good people Max says. We wanted to hug them and thank them. The restaurant isn t resting on its laurels Max will continue to roll out new menu items such as the Huevos Toastadas for brunch meatloaf sandwich for lunch heritage pork chop for dinner and the Max s Mojito signature cocktail. Other anniversary promotions include 25 gift certificates for every 100 spent. Meanwhile some things about the restaurant remain exactly the same-- which is a good thing when it comes to the famed berry cr me br l e pie. Max takes nothing for granted. The restaurant industry is fragile he says. You re only as good as your last meal.
