Description: Download the 2017 Inside Motorcycles Buyers' Guide for free today! This year's edition includes a look at the best new motorcycles and gear for the 2017 riding season as well as spotlights on dealerships, shops and businesses across Canada! We also announce our Bike of the Year and Racer of the Year selections, and also provide a full report on our 2016 long-term bike, the Yamaha FJ-09!

THE CONTENDERS e know we know--the KtM 1290 Super duke r was our Bike of the Year just two short years ago and it seems somewhat lazy of us to just hand another award to a bike that s based on the very same platform. the thing is we were quite literally forced into this by Senior editor Jason thorpe who threatened violence if we didn t bestow top honours on the new gt version of this two-wheeled dollop of hot anger and charm. Thorpe took the GT on his yearly tour up to Wawa ON (story forthcoming) despite his reservations around riding 2 000 kilometres aboard what seemed on the face of it a hooligan bike with bags. However he returned from northern Ontario raving to the rest of us--and anyone who d listen for that matter-- about the overall competence and do-it-all nature of the GT which was introduced as a 2016 model two years after its predecessor the Super Duke R came to be. All-day comfort Thorpe shouted. Power everywhere Fantastic suspension It was a little over the top now that we reflect back on it. He d stop strangers in parking lots. Do you have a moment to talk about the Super Duke GT While the rest of us here at Inside Motorcycles definitely had our favourites for this year s top bike award none of us had quite this level of passion so we let Thorpe run with it. And fair is fair there really wasn t another bike quite like the 1290 Super Duke GT introduced as a 2016 model which is an unwritten prerequisite to be nominated in our Bike of the Year voting. With its stretched-out humane ergonomics monstrous 173-horsepower 1 301 cc LC8 V-twin motor and top-notch tech package KTM has taken that proven concept--slam bags and tall bars on a powerful sport bike--and bumps it up a quantum level. Stuff those side cases hop on the Duke cue up a remote twisty road and get ready to bend space-time. The huge meaty midrange and refined controlled compliant electronic suspension turn this Grand Touring bike s rider into a post-human cyborg an extension of a powerful machine that seems like its only task is to make the person in the cockpit feel like a great rider. Heady stuff this. But we get it. There are very few bikes out there that are this fast and that also feature a humane touring-friendly riding position along with a huge gas tank (23 litres) and decent wind protection. And man is this bike ever fast. The power is essentially limitless and it s pretty much impossible to hold the throttle wide open on a public road for more than a couple of seconds at a time. But then again there s so much midrange grunt available that there s never really any need to wind it out into the upper reaches where yes indeed it can get positively frightening. The Super Duke GT positions itself into a lofty lonely sweet spot between tucked-up sport tourers and larger more bloated adventure tourers. Light and flickable like a sport bike but able to travel long distances in comfort the Super Duke GT is at the top of a very elite class. IM W There were several other combatants going rounds with the 1290 Super Duke GT in hopes of garnering Inside Motorcycles top honours amongst 2016 offerings. The first you may have guessed is the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin a bike that managed to actually live up to the expectations created by an impressive marketing campaign and public fervor thanks to its do-it-all abilities. Triumph set new standards this year for what retro bikes could be boasting wonderful acceleration ride-by-wire traction control and riding modes all while staying faithful to the original Bonnevilles of half a century ago. The thoroughly-revised Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R impressed us too proving to be worthy of the Ninja moniker on the track where its combination of power handling and a comprehensive electronics package made it a strong lithe and absolutely deadly Japanese warrior. We can t wait to try the new 2017 RR model Other notable mentions included the brutish Harley-Davidson Low Rider S aggressive Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro and the rowdy Husqvarna 701 Enduro. 10 iNSiDE mOTORCyClES mx aND Off-ROaD 2017 buyERS guiDE e d g at n e r p h o t o Inside Track Communications Inc. 95 Trinity Street Suite 101 Toronto ON M5A 3C7 416-962-RACE (7223) Fax 416-962-7208 www.insidemotorcycles.com edit editor Graeme Jones graeme insidemotorcycles.com copy editor Andrew Trevitt administration Lindsey Broad production James Neilson senior editors Colin Fraser colin csbk.ca Larry Tate larryt411 hotmail.com Warren Thaxter warrenthaxter gmail.com Jason Thorpe jason insidemotorcycles.com Andrew Trevitt andrew.trevitt gmail.com adVertising sales David Weber Rob Morton david insidemotorcycles.com rob insidemotorcycles.com sales marketing Derek Rockel derek insidemotorcycles.com Brad Hulton brad insidemotorcycles.com art production design & production Dawn McClintock Grace Kang general manager David Weber david insidemotorcycles.com office administration Isabel Weber isabel insidemotorcycles.com Lindsey Broad lindsey insidemotorcycles.com Ethan Weber customer serVice Grace Kang subscriptions insidemotorcycles.com production managers James Neilson circulation office subscription inQuiries IM publicationpartners.com subscription rates (canada) One Year 24.99 Two Years 39.99 Three Years 49.99 Where to find SUBSCRIBE ONLINE - insidemotorcycles.mysub.ca Inside Motorcycles is mailed to Canadian motorcycle enthusiasts from coast to coast. Szoke s dominance earned him top honours in the prestigious BMW Motorrad Race Trophy a global points series organized by BMW that includes riders on all continents and in multiple championship series. The Brantford ON-born racer who also claimed some wins in trials competition this year and competes at a high level in cycling also received a major honour for a motorcycle racer in Canada when he was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in October. I am very fortunate that things have gone very well for me over all the years at all the tracks in all the series said Szoke at the induction ceremony. I might limp a little when I get up in the morning but by the afternoon everything is working fine. I want to race as long as I can be competitive at a high level at least for a few more years. All these heavy steel body parts and cast iron engine components made the bikes heavy and manufacturers and the aftermarket have constantly searched for lighter stronger materials to replace steel wherever possible. Steel is still currently used in many parts as it s plentiful easily cast or machined into shape and offers excellent strength making it a cost-effective choice even by today s standards. Just as steel is an alloy of iron using carbon atoms mixed in to change its properties various types of steels can be produced depending on the application. For example chromium and molybdenum can be added to make chromoly used in many frames. Or nickel and silicon may be used for a sturdy transmission gear. Over the years aluminum has become the go-to material for many W components to replace steel. With density approximately one-third that of steel an aluminum component would weigh just one-third of an identical steel piece. However aluminum is not as strong as steel (a typical aluminum alloy has about one-third the strength of steel) and those weight savings may not be fully realized as the part must be correspondingly thicker or larger to regain some of that lost strength. In the same way various alloys of steel are used there are many alloys of aluminum with additives such as silicon iron copper and manganese and the material and manufacturing method used in a triple clamp for example is different from that used in a piston. Strength here is usually defined by the material s elastic modulus which represents how resistant a material is to non-permanent deformation and is measured in gigapascal (GPa). There are other properties such as hardness fatigue and corrosion resistance which are affected by the alloy and how the material is processed and used in manufacturing (i.e. heat treatment forged vs. cast and so on) in addition to the type of material itself. What if we had a material that offers the strength of steel and the density of aluminum Titanium comes close with a density approximately half that of steel and an elastic modulus midway between aluminum and steel this gives it a much better strength-to-weight ratio than either material. Although titanium is a plentiful material in the earth s crust difficulties in extraction and processing make it more expensive than aluminum or steel limiting its use in production. Still many bikes have titanium valves and exhaust systems applications where the material s high resistance to heat is very useful in addition to its density and strength and in limited cases titanium connecting rods are also used. 26 inside motorcycles mx and off-road 2017 buyers guide While production motorcycles make do with titanium exhaust systems many MotoGP bikes are using Inconel a superalloy made from nickel and chromium that is more dense than titanium but can better withstand extremely high temperatures. With that property an Inconel exhaust system can be made from thinner material and is lighter overall than even a titanium system. The superalloy is found elsewhere in a production motorcycle however The Kawasaki Ninja H2 and H2R use exhaust valves made from Inconel heads and steel stems frictionwelded together. For applications where strength is not so much a priority as weight savings magnesium is a popular choice. With a density of approximately two-thirds that of aluminum but just more than half the elastic modulus magnesium is used most commonly in cast or forged wheels and engine covers. Low strength is one limitation to its use but other factors include corrosion and flammability. Magnesium especially as shavings or chips during machining catches fire very easily and water does not extinguish a magnesium fire--sand must be used. Moving away from metals carbon fibre is even less dense than magnesium but with a higher elastic modulus than titanium. This composite material is made by combining strands of carbon in a woven mat with an epoxy resin. Additional materials can be used to adjust the properties of the final product and the strands can be oriented in specific ways to fabricate a part that has a different strength in one direction than another. A very laborious production process makes carbon fibre parts expensive to manufacture and it is used very little in production aside from limited-edition models. Carbon is an interesting and versatile material in that it has multiple forms and uses. For example carbon is the alloy responsible for turning iron into steel it can be extremely hard in diamond format but very soft as graphite it is the base atom in most plastics and it can be burned as coal or a hydrocarbon. Scientists are experimenting with graphene a sheet of graphite just one atom thick with incredible strength and density properties. In composite form with epoxy graphene would be much stronger than steel and lighter than carbon fibre. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) also show promise for future use. These materials use a mix of a low-density material (aluminum or magnesium) reinforced with fibres or ceramics with the result 28 inside motorcycles mx and off-road 2017 buyers guide giving very high strength and stiffness that can be tailored for a specific application much like carbon fibre is. Several companies offer MMC brake rotors for motorcycle use and other uses include pistons and cylinder liners. One factor holding back the development of metal matrix composites and other high-tech materials is that the FIM has put strict limits on materials used in both MotoGP and the World Motocross championships. In MotoGP MMCs are specifically forbidden and metallic materials have a maximum allowable specific elastic modulus (their strength-to-density ratio). In motocross no ceramics are allowed and the use of carbon and titanium is limited. Both series also put minimum weights on the motorcycles effectively limiting the use of ultra-lightweight materials as well. In the FJ-09 s case the pickier of our testers noted how exposed and unpolished the general area around the triple clamps is. Plenty of cables wires and functional components are not tidied up nor hidden behind a plastic shroud or cover. However the simple and inquisitive allLCD rectangular instrument panel tends to distract the rider from what s behind it despite a few menu issues. The bar tach is easy to read speed digits are large and centrally-located and three different data menus can be infinitely customized to show trip meters ambient and engine temperatures fuel consumption stats and more. On the downside there s an oversized menu symbol in the top right of the screen that doesn t need to be there and can t be hidden from view. Another item that benefits from long-term assessment is the 84 inside motorcycles mx and off-road 2017 buyers guide tires. It s one thing to feel out a set of tires during a few days of dry-weather use but entirely another when you get to experience the full gamut of riding surfaces from tight twisties on a summer day to chilled November pavement and wet Muskoka forest roads. Racing contributors Steve Hoffarth and Dave Minnett took the Dunlop Sportmax rubber to the limits of sport riding scrubbing the rear tire right to the very edges and came back smiling and pleased. The rear tire is a very sporty 180-series allowing for aggressive lean angles with an assuring contact patch. Touring canyon carving or even trotting along a gravel road not once did the Dunlops let us down. Despite the fact that we put an aftermarket seat on our tester the truth is that the stock Yamaha seat is noteworthy in its comfort and contour. We did all kinds of riding on this bike--everything from a 2 000 km round-trip tour to Lake Superior to daily commutes in mind-numbing downtown Toronto traffic--and never did our butts tell our brains that the covered piece of moulded foam was the source of discomfort or pain. There are plenty of more expensive bikes that couldn t claim the same. The seat also has two settings low and high. For the most part the low setting suited our gang with shorter fellas like Jones and senior editor Larry Tate able to get the balls of their feet down at a stop (the bike s overall light feeling and low centre of gravity help in this regard). However the big-and-tall crew of Hoffarth and Fraser both well above six feet tall preferred the high setting. It took a YouTube tutorial and a bit of trial-and-error for us to figure out how to change settings but we eventually got the hang of it. Luckily you re likely to only have to do this once if at all Being that the FJ-09 is based on the FZ-09 it s easy to forget that the FJ designation signifies a connection to the FJR1300 Yamaha s mile-eating flagship sport tourer. We put over 13 000 km on our test unit in 2016 and not once did any of our several test pilots complain of fatigue or discomfort. That s saying an awful lot. Between the seat ergonomics legroom and lack of vibration riding the FJ-09 is an overall relaxing and comfortable experience. The standard hand guards will deflect some of the wind and cold off your hands and they keep the bugs off your knuckles. The LED headlight shoots a broad ray of whitish-blue light onto dark roads although the angry-Transformer nose area didn t impress the traditionalists on our team (the same people who raved about that standard centre stand ). Fuel range is likewise impressive we got as many as 340 km on a tank a separate trip meter starts up when you hit reserve and Yamaha says you should get 50 km before the 18-litre tank goes dry. We pushed past 40 km a few times so the claim is valid Fuel economy ranged between 4.5-5.25 L 100 km (44-52 US mpg) during the several readings we took in various situations very respectable considering our twitchy throttle hands and the sporty nature of the motor. The manual recommends a visit to the dealership at 1 000 km for an oil change and brief check-up and again at 7 000 km (or six months) and every six months after that for fresh oil and to have a certified Yamaha technician inspect and lubricate all the appropriate bits. While the FJ-09 doesn t come with standard luggage Yamaha offers a couple of soft and hard side cases and top cases too. You can spend a little or a lot on a set of aftermarket bags depending on your tendencies but we must admit that a set of cases makes this bike a proper all-day multi-day tourer. We also added a set of Barkbusters hand guards a Puig windscreen Sargent Cycle seat Yamaha luggage rack and a full Hindle exhaust system. Read about these additions in the next issue of Inside Motorcycles. We d like to sincerely thank Yamaha Motor Canada for giving us the opportunity to spend this past season on the FJ-09 and provide our readers such a comprehensive review of a single model. It lived up to our expectations and is one of the most versatile competent fun and well-rounded motorcycles on the market right now. It really does everything well. If you want a little more personal feedback read the impressions on the ensuing pages to find out what riders of different backgrounds and riding styles thought of the FJ-09. IM The FJ-09 strikes a fine balance between the motorcycle it s based on the FZ-09 and Yamaha s flagship sport touring bike the FJR1300. An upright neutral riding position ample legroom supercomfy seat and a relaxed reach to the handlebar make the FJ-09 a bike you can ride all day without issue. COLIN FRASER SENIOR EDITOR Scaling at well under 500 pounds (227 kg) wet and putting out just over 100 horsepower on the Dynojet dyno after a long summer s use and abuse by IM staffers the long-term FJ-09 has much to recommend as a versatile sports tourer. This is a bike that is right sized with enough of everything to be fun but not overdone in ways that can adversely affect the overall behaviour (specifically weight) of the design. The adjustable seat height makes this FJ a good choice for many differently sized pilots at six feet tall I can say that I found it comfortable. I liked the stock windshield although it produces a fair amount of buffeting and others found the wind noise too much. Still the star of this show is the 847 cc triple powerplant a strong flexible and entertaining engine that always engages no matter what type of riding you undertake. Like my favourite Vtwins three-cylinder engines just seem to produce enjoyable torquey performance aimed at enthusiasts. Yamaha has certainly perfected the triple s fuelling since this debuted on the FZ in 2014 and the various ride modes work well without killing overall performance or hindering the superb driveability. Our custom Hindle pipe certainly entertains but puts the FJ into the noisy category--like many Triumph triples The chassis is well suited to most riding a little stiff but offering very good feedback and therefore easy and entertaining to ride on twisty roads--even bumpy ones. Oh yeah the boxy instruments are ugly but they work well. The Yamaha-sourced hard luggage is efficient and tucked in but the keys are a bit tricky. So despite all the pros it s not quite perfect... yet. 86 inside motorcycles mx and off-road 2017 buyers guide GRAEME JONES EDITOR Is it a touring bike A standard Maybe a naked No... a sport bike Actually the FJ-09 is really a hybrid of all these offerings. It s perhaps best described as a modern-day UJM (universal Japanese motorcycle) by virtue of its sit-up riding position big comfy seat standard footpeg location metric inline engine and versatile nature. Unless you ve got hang-ups on the kind of bike you ride (It s crotch rockets for me Cruisers only please Euro bikes only mein herr ) you may want to consider the riding experience the FJ-09 has to offer. Sport guy You ll love this engine. It s punchy down low and revs up to 11 250 rpm hard-paced riders will enjoy the traction control direct throttle response (in the A riding mode) compliant adjustable suspension and handling that is agile yet firm-footed. Oh and the brakes are great too. Touring junkie The FJ-09 s stock seat is particularly noteworthy for its all-day comfort (passenger seat included). The handlebar position is wide and relaxed and legroom is generous even for taller riders. Some of our team felt the stock windscreen was just fine but I couldn t handle the wind noise. Vibration is nonexistent and the engine spins at a subdued 4 000 rpm at 100 km h. Bags aren t standard but there are options on the market at every price range to extend your touring range. Even in the city the FJ-09 is easy to get along with thanks to a light clutch lever low centre of gravity and overall narrow disposition. Even shorter riders like me will find no issue controlling the FJ-09 in any situation. There are plenty of bikes that offer do-it-all capabilities but very few can match the affordability of the 11 299 Yamaha FJ-09. Side cases aren t standard on the FJ-09 but they establish the bike as a proper sporttourer. The 847 cc three-cylinder engine is a sweetheart three riding modes are on tap and to make a good thing even better Yamaha is including three-level traction control and fully-adjustable front suspension for 2017. LARRY TATE SENIOR EDITOR DOG LOVER In the opinion of many (me included) Yamaha has really knocked the ball out of the park with the FZ FJ XSR triple. I hate raving about bikes but it s pretty hard to beat the FJ-09 s combination of a fabulous motor good chassis and ergonomics and better suspension than you d expect for a machine that s ridiculously cheap for what it offers. For about 13 grand (including bags)-- considerably less than you d spend on a 600 cc sport bike--you get a comfortable bike that handles well has good luggage will haul ass when required has ABS and comes with a centre stand for easy maintenance. What s not to like Our FJ-09 ticked off all the boxes for me. It s everything that I ve modified my last two bikes into capable quick road burners that work well both on a weekend day ride and an extended tour. As comfortable and practical as the bike is the fantastic three-cylinder engine is what really brings the FJ alive. Both torquey and revvy it s an absolute gas to use the kind of engine that simply goads you into misbehaving. Endless fun The three power modes seem pointless to me the Standard and B settings merely knocking the edge off the A mode s fun (although I ll admit the softer B setting works well on gravel roads). My current BMW R1200R may be a bit more comfortable and the bags have more luggage capacity but I m thinking hard about swapping it out for an FJ next season. And for a journalist to actually consider spending his own money on a bike you know it has to be good. 88 inside motorcycles mx and off-road 2017 buyers guide STEVE HOFFARTH ROAD RACER Let s talk about the elephant in the room from the mid- 90s ZX-7 purple wheels (they re blue -Ed) to the Transformer-like face the Yamaha FJ-09 is polarizing. Fellow riders I met either loved it or hated it. As time went on I started to appreciate its look though I wondered Is it really that hard to make an aesthetically pleasing motorcycle Make no mistake this is the universal Japanese motorcycle that riders have been requesting for many years. It simply does everything fine is comfortable for an all-day ride yet powerful enough to keep it interesting and nimble and easy to ride around town. Speeds in excess of 140 km h see the bike weave back and forth with the Yamaha-sourced saddlebags on--it s subtle but enough to be unsettling at those speeds. Power is sufficient but uninspiring in Standard and B modes but switching to A mode and turning TC off unleashes the full power and excitement. Fuelling in A mode is crisper but throttle response is notchy translating to an on off feel so it s a bit difficult to be smooth. Handling in long sweeping curves is solid and the FJ holds a line fine but this isn t a racy sport bike. The saddlebags although small are convenient and the integrated bungie hooks are a nice feature that avoids scratching of the paint. In the end the Yamaha FJ-09 is a compromised motorcycle this is its best quality and also its worst.
