C 8 BEST THE BEST IN FINE HOMES North Avondale welcomes you By Jack Heffron I FIRST MET NORTH AVONDALE more than 15 years ago while running along its winding picturesque streets. At the time I worked for a publishing company in nearby Evanston across the street from the Xavier University campus. A small but spirited group of us would head out for a noon run and our favorite route included this special neighborhood. I d never been through it before not sure I d even heard of it. But like most people when they arrive there I was smitten immediately. The grand historic homes each so different from the others each more impressive than the last the wide lawns huge trees gentle hills the curving streets and gaslight poles -- everything combined to look like a movie set an imagined American Dream place that couldn t possibly exist in the real world. Hard to believe it was located in the heart of Cincinnati. The city has plenty of mansions of course but typically they re set far back from the street on forbidding hunks of property that silently say Stay away. But the elaborate houses that we passed at our joggers gait felt more like the homes of actual people who knew each other who were you know neighbors. Some are big and elaborate others small and cozy. And while each house has its own distinctive features somehow they blend together to form a cohesive neighborhood look. Given its unique character people have a tough time going through North Avondale for the first time without wanting to know more. Who built these homes And when And how had such a grand old neighborhood managed to preserve itself without exuding that mothballed past-their-prime feeling so apparent in certain areas that have long since left their best days behind but stubbornly hang on. This place looked as vital as surely it had looked a hundred years ago. When our little group trotted along the sidewalks of North Avondale for the first time on that sunny afternoon I asked Charlie our de facto leader Where are we half-wondering if we had indeed somehow wandered onto a movie set. He just said North Avondale like I should already know. Then he added Pretty amazing huh When Paddy and Peter Dignon moved into their home in North Avondale their experience was far less wonderful than mine. Paddy recalls seeing a National Guard tank parked at the top of their street. The Dignons moved in during the spring of 1968 right after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. when riots rocked the streets of Avondale not far to the south. Throughout that spring Cincinnati like many cities throughout America endured violent civil rights protests. The young couple however was not fazed by the nearby turmoil Paddy Dignon recalls adding Everyone pulled together and was sensible about things. Paddy and Peter were New Zealanders who had moved here a few years before for Peter s job at Cincinnati Children s Hospital. Peter a pediatrician was helping to set up the hospital s genetics department. The house in North Avondale was a rental and came with Paddy recalls several fellow renters -- graduate students at Xavier University. The young couple didn t hesitate to move into the neighborhood despite the riots just up the road. Peter had to drive through some of the worst areas to get to the hospital Paddy says but we had no misgivings about moving to North Avondale. The integration movement was going strong at the time and we wanted to be part of that. We wanted our children to grow up in a neighborhood where all people were welcome. North Avondale had that reputation and that was one of the big reasons we chose to live there. After renting the house for a couple of years they bought it -- and stayed for nearly 40 years. In many ways North Avondale has always enjoyed a reputation for being a place where all people are welcome. Like a handful of other 19th century Cincinnati neighborhoods Avondale blossomed as a pastoral suburb for wealthy folks looking to escape the city s noise and heat and pollution. Local barons of commerce including Barney Kroger Samuel Pogue and Andrew Erkenbrecher erected impressive homes in Avondale which became an incorporated village in 1864. After continued growth it was annexed by the City of Cincinnati in 1896. As the city expanded so did Avondale with new homes being built in the northern section of the neighborhood beginning right around the start of the new century. By this time Avondale already included a broader range of diversity than did some other Cincinnati neighborhoods and that trend continued in the decades that followed. In what we now call North Avondale many German and Eastern-European Jewish families built homes while the southern section of Avondale included a sizable Jewish population along with many Greek- and African-American residents. They collectively forged a very distinct culture which drew still more minority groups for whom some other parts of town weren t exactly rolling out Howdy neighbor mats. By the late 1930s new neighborhoods to the north and east began to draw away a growing portion of the younger and wealthier folks in Avondale. The large old homes they left behind were in some cases subdivided into cheap apartments. Property values eroded. Absentee landlords and unethical real estate practices hastened the neighborhood s decline through the 1950s. Seeing this trend a group of North Avondale homeowners formed the North Avondale Neighborhood Association (NANA) in 1960. According to the group s website the goals were clear promote intra-community relations and help make North Avondale a racially and economically integrated stable neighborhood. ADAMS A dream of a home comes true By Jack Heffron By Jack Heffron WHEN LOCAL COUPLE Joseph and Elaine bought the property at the corner of Baum Street and Monastery in 1997 they had a vision. And fortunately patience. The Mt. Adams building erected in 1865 had been uninhabited for a decade unless as Elaine notes you count feral cats as residents. It comprised three single-family rental units and most recently a deli. Even the giant red FOR SALE sign plastered across the weathered front of the building couldn t entice a buyer until Joseph first saw the possibilities. The couple s dream home needed shall we say a bit of work. In fact the renovation ended up taking 32 months the last 20 of which the couple spent living in the property s attached one-bedroom apartment. They added a top floor which is now the primary living area and features a conical tower. All interior walls stairways plumbing and wiring were replaced and an elevator was put in to ease the trip from the front door to the top floor. We needed to add garages move door and window openings in solid brick walls Elaine recalls. The journey was an unbelievable daily affair but we got to watch every single stroke of genius being delivered to the canvas of our next home. One of the main reasons for the long process was the creation of floor-to-ceiling raised-wood paneling throughout the home. The rich mahogany-toned wood covers much of the home s interior walls doorways bookcases and mantels and includes intricately carved moldings and beaded trim. The result is nothing short of remarkable giving the home a warm cozy atmosphere both classic and contemporary. The couple had been through their share of renovations in the past having remodeled a house that had previously been converted from a stable and also built a home both in Indian Hill. When their youngest child graduated from high school they set their sights on a move to Mt. Adams. They remember that their friends in Indian Hill were surprised by the plan. It was the closest living unit to downtown Cincinnati with direct walkways to both Sixth Street and Court Street Joseph explains. It was perched on a corner with no obstruction for a 270-degree-wide view with parks providing protected open areas. The panoramic view through the windows that wrap around the west-facing turret is without question spectacular and they have spent many evenings gazing at the city and at the sunsets beyond. The proximity to the heart of downtown allows them to feel part of the city s life while nestled above the boil of noise and traffic. Given their location near the bottom of Mt. Adams they re also far enough from the popular entertainment areas above them that their street remains quiet. Joseph is a lawyer with an office downtown and says he could easily walk to work whenever he wanted. Elaine adds He did it once. Joseph begs to differ recalling clearly that in all the years they ve lived in the home he s done it twice. Nevertheless they agree it could be done with little effort whenever the new owners are so inclined. The couple does walk to Reds and Bengals games and they like that the restaurants in Over-the -Rhine are just a couple of minutes away by car. When the children come to visit they jog across the nearby bridges into Northern Kentucky. The home itself is quite an accomplishment but both Joseph and Elaine are quick to deflect any credit for its creation. Instead they lavish praise on the people who turned their dream into reality beginning with architect Tom Arnold and builder Ric McFarland. They call Nick Hetzer who was in charge of the paneling a world-class craftsman noting that the project involved thousands of pieces of curved arched angled and flat pieces of wood. Elaine adds Twenty years later there s not a single hairline crack anywhere in his finished product. The private backyard includes a spiral staircase entrance and was designed by Dennis Raymond of Raymond Landscaping. Interior designer Marymac Schooley helped find stone and tile. Ted Gantz of Sycamore Street Studios created the ironwork for the exterior and interior. And they credit the Flottemesch family for the beautiful kitchen and powder room cabinetry. This house is more about all of them than it is about us Elaine says. It s about their unbelievably fine craftsmanship. It s nice to know we have such talented people in Cincinnati. Now that Joseph and Elaine are spending more time at their home in Harbor Springs Michigan they are moving to a smaller home in Mt. Adams leaving their masterpiece for someone else to enjoy. It s under-utilized now says Joseph. Looking back the couple says they don t regret all the work and expense and patience they put into creating their magnificent home. Never Elaine says. Arnold Palmer had died. I slumped in my seat. Damn I said. Damn. Damn. What What s wrong my wife said. Wait. Listen I said turning up the volume. I wanted details. Arnold Palmer The golfer Yeah yeah. I wanna hear this. For 35 years she has been forced to live on the fringe of sports. My vocation dictated some involvement and the birth of two sons -- gifted in games at a young age -- pushed her further into a world of sports pages sports broadcasts mounds of equipment dirty socks dirty jocks knee braces ankle braces and ultimately more useless knowledge than she would ever have chosen on her own. During a holiday dinner and given a sympathetic audience of sisters and her mother she once said Name another woman you know who can open her antique china cabinet and find a baseball bat or a tennis racket. I wash things -- I don t even know what they are. Through it all she remains a good sport. What happened she said. You knew Palmer Shhhsh. Listen I said. The announcer was short on details. Arnold Palmer he said died of natural causes. He was 87 years old. The world loses one of the greatest golfers of all time. That was it. That s all he said eager to get on to the latest news on the Alabama football team and the upcoming game with Kentucky as if there were any doubt about the outcome of that contest. I cursed the limits of the report on Palmer and switched to something on Sirius. You knew Palmer my wife said. Tell me. I didn t know him I said. I met him once. Spent a day trying to get an interview with him in Lexington. Finally got a few words enough for a column. But it was nothing like I expected. You were impressed I take it she said. That s not even the word for it. There were few like Palmer. Nothing even close today. That s the worst part the very worst part. Over the next hundred miles of straight slab headed for the Florida border I told her the story of meeting Palmer at a charity golf event at Griffin Gate a course on the fringe of Lexington Kentucky. Palmer was scheduled to play a few holes and meet with his fans. My editor at the Cincinnati Post thought I would have a good shot at getting a one-on-one with Palmer as he put it the greatest golfer that ever lived. To that point in my career (it was probably 1980 or 81) Palmer was one of those fringe legends in sports like Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull Rod Laver and Tony Trabert Eddie Arcaro and A.J. Foyt -- men who had ascended the highest peaks of their sport but doing so in a world that didn t touch the hearts of millions of mainstream fans those who leaned toward baseball football and basketball to find their idols. In the two or three days leading up to the interview I read everything I could find on Palmer. But what I learned -- fourtime Masters champion winner of the US Open in 1960 British Open Champ in 1961 and 1962 62 tour wins -- none of that touched the scene that greeted me at Griffin Gate in Lexington. I arrived two hours before Palmer was scheduled to tee off yet there was hardly a spot to be had in the parking lot. The hotel lobby was filled with people spilling out of every bar restaurant and alcove and there was no middle ground about this crowd. There were retirees and grade-school kids middleaged business folk and men and women who looked as though they had walked right off the job. There was every kind of attire imaginable from fur and silk to sweatshirts and blue jeans. There were beer drinkers and members of the martini crowd. In a corner shielded by ferns a pair of priests sipped on whiskeys while talking about Palmer. Such a gentleman one said. A man of the people the other offered. A swing right off a public course but my what results The most remarkable thing about the crowd was the women their sheer number and their look. They seemed to make up at least half the crowd which stretched from the lobby across the pool deck and on out toward the tee box where Palmer would ultimately appear. The women represented every age group and occupation all -- in one fashion or another -- well turned out as if they were headed 57 LAST WORDS A man of the people . . . A swing right off a public course but my what results for an appointment of some importance. They chatted and tittered and as Arnold s arrival time came near they were at the lead of the slow progression toward the golf course. I was witnessing one regiment of Arnie s Army the legions that followed and revered this man of humble beginnings and international acclaim. Once before had I witnessed such allegiance. It was in the fall of 1978 when Muhammad Ali returned to Louisville Kentucky after defeating Leon Spinks and regaining the heavyweight title for the third time. That night at the Fairgrounds it seemed as if the state s entire population turned out to see their native son chanting Ali and crowding ever closer to get a better look at the man. Ten minutes before Palmer was to meet his public a voice on a loudspeaker urged all in attendance to make their way to the course. Mr. Palmer will tee off in a matter of minutes he said a smile hanging on his every word. Prestige is not often accompanied by punctuality but precisely at 1 P.M. sliding glass doors were opened and Arnold Palmer appeared. The applause the cheers the whistles fell like a gentle avalanche. He was deeply tanned with an easy smile. He raised an arm high above his head like a general leading a charge. With that he began making his way through the throng and there -- for all to see -- was his true gift far greater than his ability to put red numbers on the scorecard. As he made his way through the crowd he stopped here and there talking and shaking hands. His smile was genuine his eyes warm and unwavering. I remember thinking about how my father had once described an old Army buddy. He looks like a man with no worries no debt no enemies. He could laugh at the devil. That was Palmer. But there was something else. Somehow he could make each person in the crowd feel as though he were speaking directly to them that he cared about them -- that they mattered. I told my wife about following Palmer that day trying to get enough time with the man for a story and how he politely deferred to his fans saying I m sorry. This day is for them. I hope you understand. That of course was the story. Here was a man who fully and truthfully appreciated his fans and what they had given him an individual who went out of his way to show that appreciation. A unique man my wife said. Yeah I said.
