(Below) The new Pinty s NASCAR showcar will be part of the sponsor s at track displays this season. t he 2016 season was proclaimed the new era for canada s professional stock car racing series as the touring nascar se- lap contests with the intermission reserved for a round of the trackbased super late model division. the new format will give the fans a spectacular day of racing action stated speedway spokesman Brian swidrovich. three full high-powered races running back-to-back-to-back is something pretty special and something the fans and drivers won t forget. another notable change to the calendar this year is the return to the original home of the cascar super series delaware speedway. inheriting the date previously reserved for sunset speedway the choko fast eddie 250 was the second race of the season taking place on saturday June 3. the return to the half-mile delaware oval was a much-anticipated season highlight for southwestern ontario race fans and the drivers alike. that s a special event for me. delaware is my home track it s literally 20 minutes from home said two-time pinty s series champion dJ Kennington. i ve won there before i can t think of a better place to start collecting wins again. in the end the delaware checkered flag went to Quebec racer alex labb who came home in front of alex tagliani. Kennington gave his hometown fans reason to smile with a third-place finish. ries welcomed a new title sponsor in pinty s delicious foods. another highlight was the series triumphant return to the streets of toronto for the pinty s grand prix of toronto during the city s indycar race weekend. and this year might well be dubbed new eratwo-point-oh for the nascar pinty s series with changes taking place in the top executive position as well as the expansion to 13 points-paying races on the schedule. cherie putnam assumed the role of series director for the 2017 season. in doing so she became the first woman to front the nascar canada series and only second in nascar touring series history. putnam comes to the position with years of experience on both sides of the sport having previously been a part of the dJK (Kennington) racing operation. i ll be busy as there s a lot to learn from a director s standpoint admitted putnam. While i was familiar with a lot of the operations working as an official the director has to get a little more involved in the details of the series. in 2017 putnam will oversee the running of 13 individual races at 11 racing facilities. the road and street courses of canadian tire motorsport park circuit icar trois-rivi res and toronto all return to the calendar as do the ovals of autodrome chaudi re and st-eustache riverside and Kawartha speedways. the one-third-mile Wyant group raceway in saskatoon will also enjoy a return engagement on the 2017 schedule but new for this year is a doubleheader format. taking place over a single day (July 26) the race day schedule will see the pinty s series drivers run two 100 courtesy pinty s delicious foods 8 NASCAR.CA EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Kevin lacroix (left) made his intentions to compete for the 2017 nascar pinty s series title clear with his seasonopening win at ctmp two-time series . champion andrew ranger (27) finished second in the soggy race. paolo pedicelli e By Todd Lewis the eighth canadian to race in the daytona 500 in february. A title contender must be able to run consistently at the front of a talent-laden field withstand barrages and automotive assaults from every direction overcome unforeseen mechanical and personal obstacles and face opposition with unwavering confidence. A championship contender must have a reliable support team from the top of the organization to the bottom each member working in harmony towards a single goal. And while a championshipwinning effort is built around hard work and racing knowledge a true contender although they will never admit it relies on racing luck as well. The unpredictability of motorsports is what makes it so enjoyable for racing fans and so frustrating for competitors. Those who manage to race closest to the edge aboard the best equipment available to them are the ones who will most often be successful. Those people are known as championship contenders. This year carrying new sponsorship from Lowe s Canada Tagliani is determined to compete in all 13 events in the NPS calendar and to challenge for the series championship. We are very proud to have secured this deal (with Lowes) but results will be very important if we hope to maintain a long relationship. I will be leaving my options open to run in other races but the Pinty s Series is my main focus this year said Tagliani. Generally considered to be a road racing specialist Tagliani has quickly adapted to the short ovals and has recorded victories at Sunset and Edmonton Speedways. In his 2015 appearance on Sunset s 1 3-mile high-banked oval Tagliani lapped the entire field an achievement never or since witnessed in the Pinty s Series. The No. 18 Lowe s EpiPen St-Hubert Tagliani Autosport Chevrolet will once again be prepared by Scott Steckly s 22 Racing organization. With Crew Chief Tyler Case returning to the pit box to call strategy the strong combination of preparedness and race craft could offer a promise for an inaugural NASCAR title for the talented driver. ALEX TAGLIANI Despite having made 45 NASCAR Pinty s Series starts over an eight year period due to scheduling conflicts Alex Tagliani (below) has never managed to run a full season campaign. Last year a date on the starting grid for the Indianapolis 500 forced the five-time Pinty s Series winner to miss the season opener at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. However Tag rebounded by claiming a trio of race wins and ultimately ended the year in third spot in the final scoring. paolo pedicelli ANDREW RANGER A pair of NASCAR Pinty s Series championships earned in 2007 and 2009 opened the door for former open-wheel star Andrew Ranger (above) to explore other possibilities within the North American stock car racing fraternity. A winner on the ARCA and K&N Pro Series tours and further strong performances in NASCAR s upper-echelon divisions in 2014 the Roxton Pond resident returned to his Canadian roots joining forces with Mopar Canada in an effort to contend for a third Pinty s Series crown. The record holder in career victories (22) Ranger has come up just short of a championship three-peat finishing in third spot in 2015 and as the title runner-up last year. In 2016 Ranger guided his No. 27 Mopar Expresslane Pennzoil Dodge to two race victories and nine Top 10 finishes but fell 54 points shy of Cayden Lapcevich in the title hunt. Once again aboard the DJK Racing-prepared Dodge Ranger will have the advantage of the new lighter Mopar M1 powerplant under the hood possibly the element that can carry the affable driver to a third NASCAR crown. This is the year for my comeback laughed Ranger. But the pressure is on Mopar has put a lot of energy into this program we need to win and finish every lap. That will be the key finishing well every race and picking up points whenever we can. 20 NASCAR.CA ed Gatner GreG macpherson LOUIS-PHILIPPE (LP) DUMOULIN From his Rookie of the Year award in 2011 to NASCAR Pinty s Series champion in 2014 LP Dumoulin (above right) has definitely developed an affinity for stock car racing following a successful career in both open wheeled and sports cars. Familiar with the ups-and-downs of racing fortunes Dumoulin endured a frustrating season in 2015 as he failed to find a way into victory lane although he did manage to end the year in fourth spot in the final scoring riding a record of eight top ten finishes. Last year LP and his brother Jean-Francois (JF) centralized their Dumoulin Competition headquarters forming their own NASCAR Pinty s Series team and setting up shop in their home town of TroisRivi res. Working through the obstacles that normally accompany the development of a new motorsports shop put the Dumoulin racing program behind schedule the No. 47 WeatherTech Group Bellemare Transport Dodge not completely up to speed until the fifth race on the calendar. A fourth place finish on the streets of Toronto was eventually followed up by a string of runner-up race results. A final top five on the Kawartha oval allowed Dumoulin to tie rookie Kevin Lacroix in the point standings the Trifluvien ending the campaign in fifth spot. We re building on what we had at the end of last year. We have a system where we can see what we needed to improve upon and over the winter we did just that. We re set to go said Dumoulin. With a now-solid foundation to build on and a recently signed two-year sponsorship extension with WeatherTech Dumoulin appears to have all of the pieces necessary to make another determined run for the championship. perry nelson finished out of the top three and has a pair of NASCAR series championships to his credit. In 2012 the No. 17 Castrol Edge Dodge found its way into the winner s circle on seven occasions including a streak of five in a row. Unfortunately Kennington s more recent trip to victory lane was in 2013 when he succeeded in conquering the street course in Trois-Rivi res. Noted Kennington We need to get back to winning that s all there is to it. We ve got the car to do it and I don t think that I ve slowed down. But it s so hard to win in this series the competition is so tough everything has to be perfect is you hope to be successful. Along with a race-proven fleet of cars DJK Racing will this year implant the new MOPAR M1 motor in the No. 17 Challenger. Kennington explained that the weight savings with the new powerplant will allow the team to shift the ballast around in the car in order to further improve the handling. Kennington is hoping to carry the momentum from a pair of top four finishes in the final two races of 2106 into the new season professing that a quick start to the year is one big key to success Because it s so hard to play catch up. ALEX LABB A large number of NASCAR Pinty s Series followers believe that 2017 could be a breakout year for Alex Labb (below). Despite having just a single race win to his credit (Autodrome DJ KENNINGTON A perennial front runner and one of the NASCAR Pinty s Series original competitors DJ Kennington (right) has suffered through two (for him) sub-par seasons with overall finishes of fifth and sixth in the past two years. (former CASCAR Champion) Don Thomson built us a new oval car this year so we re now set for a full season said Lacroix. I m hoping we can carry our momentum from last year into the new season. With good cars and Don calling the shots from the pitbox I think we re in good shape to make a title run this year. Lacroix stated that he needs to improve his self-control and race management . If that is all he needs a potential richard coburn title may well be within his grasp. Chaudiere-2016) Labb is a former Quebec Super Truck Series champion (2009) an ACT Rookie of the Year and was recognized as the youngest ACT Quebec Series champion when he captured the crown in 2014. He added to his resume with multiple wins on the PASS North Tour. 2016 was Labb s first full season in the Pinty s Series and he immediately proved that his No. 32 Can-Am Kappa Cyclops Gear Fusion was a potential winner. In 12 race appearances Labb secured four pole positions and recorded four podium finishes ending the year in seventh spot overall. We saw what we were lacking and focused on improving those parts of the program. We ve spent a lot of time working on our motor program we should have good things under the hood. The Quebec driver also noted that the Go Fas Racing team added some additional personnel over the off-season including Crew Chief Mario Gosselin. Labb will be attempting to get his full NASCAR license this year and a championship in the Canadian version would go a long way as a stepping stone to a full time career in the top divisions of stock car competition. CAYDEN LAPCEVICH Sixteen-year-old Cayden Lapcevich (above) rewrote the NASCAR Pinty s Series record books in 2016 becoming the series youngest Rookie of the Year and the youngest driver in NASCAR Touring Series history to be proclaimed a series champion. Obviously inheriting the family trait for on-track success this third generation driver inherited the seat of his father Jeff s No. 76 Dodge and carried it to three race victories and an even dozen Top 10 finishes n the way to the title. Unfortunately Lapcevich s success has not translated into sponsorship support for the 2017 campaign. We ve got some long time sponsors (Springer s Meats Troy Cove Marine Ace Services) helping us out but is nothing else comes through we ll be going race-to-race trying to pick up local sponsors as we go explained Lapcevich. Obviously blessed with talent and undisputable race craft it would be a shame if Corporate Canada refused to recognize the potential of the family-based Fastline racing organization. However if financing is forthcoming Lapcevich could indeed find himself as the only NASCAR Pinty s Series driver to earn back-to-back titles. tim mcGill KEVIN LACROIX As a relative newcomer to stock cars Kevin Lacroix (right) has nevertheless adapted quickly to the full-bodied cars having previously enjoying success in the Formula BMW Star Mazda Atlantic divisions. In 2015 Lacroix tested the waters of the NASCAR Pinty s Series and surprised many by scoring two race victories in only five starts. Last year the No. 74 Bumper-To-Bumper Total Dodge effort started slowly with a disappointing mechanical non-finish in the season opener but Lacroix rebounded rolling up a record of nine topten finishes including spectacular victories at the Grand Prix of 22 NASCAR.CA WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS I n ten seasons of competition five drivers have earned the right to be recognized as champion of the NASCAR Pinty s Series. A championship in Canada s only professional stock car racing series can be a career-defining moment bringing with it rewards and accolades and opening doors for other racing opportunities. The five NASCAR Pinty s Series titlists Scott Steckly Andrew Ranger DJ Kennington LP Dumoulin and Cayden Lapcevich described what it meant to and for them to achieve the honour of NASCAR Champion. change for me it was a completely different car. At the time I was with a different team (Dave Jacombs Racing). I didn t know the tracks it was all very stressful. In that first year I won the final race at Kawartha (Speedway) to win the championship by over 100 points from DJ (Kennington). I was definitely happy to be a NASCAR champion but the effect didn t really hit me until I got my championship ring in New York. The second championship came after a dream season I think I won six races in 12 starts. That championship determined what else I could do and opened a lot of doors for me. I raced in the NASCAR Nationwide (now Xfinity) Series in Montreal and finished GreG macpherson (2015) third and I was able to get other races in K&N ARCA the NASCAR Truck Series and the Nationwide series. Competing in the NASCAR Pinty s Series in my home country allows me to travel with my family it s much more relaxed. Stock car racing is a family sport and being able to take my camper to the races with my family lets me enjoy a good experience every race weekend. My ultimate goal is to be a paid NASCAR driver. With two Canadian championships it s easier to approach sponsors. The large exposure of NASCAR racing in Canada has given me the confidence to go further. SCOTT STECKLY The only four-time series champion Scott Steckly (above) captured the title in 2008 2011 2013 and 2015. I never really dreamed about being a NASCAR champion. It hasn t come easy but it proves that you can do what you want to do if you work hard enough at it. In 2006 we finally won our first CASCAR race but then we got on a roll and when the series transitioned to NASCAR we started having good success. It took a long time to build our whole program up to be in the position to contend with other teams that had been properly funded for years. But we slowly built 22 Racing into a team that could win races and challenge for championships. After we got two championships we were tied with DJ (Kennington) and Andrew (Ranger) that in itself was pretty amazing. To get three ahead of DJ and Andrew and all the other great drivers in the series was even more special. We kept at it and got four making us one of only 33 drivers in all of NASCAR who have done that. To get your name on the wall in the NASCAR Hall of Fame is a special feeling. To do it four times is amazing. Looking at your name on the wall makes you realize how much you need to thank the people who have helped you along the way all the people all the sponsors all of the supporters who made it happen. DJ KENNINGTON DJ Kennington s (opposite page top left) first national championship came in 2010. And two years later riding a record of seven race victories including five-in-a-row the St. Thomas Ontario driver was able to make his second trip to the NASCAR Touring Series Champion s Gala. I ve done a ton of racing in my career won a bunch of races and some championships. But after 17 years of trying to win a NASCAR title to finally get one made the wait all worthwhile. We go into every year with the goal of winning races and we let the points take care of themselves. That s what we did in our championship seasons and that s still our goal. When we finally got our first championship it was a very special joe hamilton (2007) ANDREW RANGER Former IndyCar racer Andrew Ranger (right) won the first-ever NASCAR Pinty s Series championship in 2007 and he became the first two-time champ two years later. My sponsor Castrol has been with me from day one. To represent them at the banquet was a great way to thank them for their years of support. of the Year title but also the NASCAR Pinty s Series crown. We ve been at this for so long it s really cool to be able to continue the family tradition explained the third generation driver. And all of the struggles we went through last year made the championship even sweeter. Recognized and rewarded for his championship winning efforts at the NASCAR Touring Series banquet in Charlotte Lapcevich absorbed the atmosphere and enjoyed the moment while also being mindful of his stock car racing peers. These are the guys I could be racing against in the next couple of years. One day NASCAR took us out and put us in go-karts. It was kind of interesting to watch the other drivers and see how they reacted to each other. It was supposed to be fun racing but it didn t take much for the competitor in all of us to come out Intimately familiar with the ups and downs of motorsports fortunes Lapcevich would definitely prefer to pursue a career at the wheel of a race car but has a contingency plan in place should his active racing come to a premature end. I ve been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio where I will be studying motorsports technology but my ultimate goal is to be a professional driver and I know there s only so far I can go in Canada. I ll finish out this year in the Pinty s Series but I know I need to head to the States pretty soon. Going south with a championship under my belt might help to open some doors. That championship meant everything to us myself the team and the sponsors. After winning the Rookie title WeatherTech signed to be our sponsor and I promised these guys that we were going for wins and for the championship. We re very proud of our achievements together it took many years of hard work to make it happen. With our name on the NASCAR trophy it means that the sponsors are all over the place in the media which means a lot to them and to me personally. My family and friends were so happy for us after supporting us for all these years it meant the world to me to share our joy with them. A championship takes so much hard work it was huge to win against all the good drivers and good teams in the NASCAR series. It was a huge accomplishment and to be able to take our car to the awards banquet in the Hall of Fame in Charlotte that I think was the proudest moment of my racing career. CAYDEN LAPCEVICH When Fastline Motorsports lost its long-time sponsor just prior to the start of the 2016 season it left the team s future in the NASCAR Pinty s Series in jeopardy. 16-year-old Cayden Lapcevich (right) had been prepared to inherit the seat in the No. 76 Dodge a ride previously reserved for his father Jeff when the team was thrown into turmoil. With only sufficient funding to run the first three races the series rookie focused on earning enough success to attract attention to their racing effort. Andrew Ranger won the second race of the season which took place on June 17 on the legendary road course at Mosport International Raceway (now Canadian Tire Motorsport Park). It would end up being Ranger s only victory of the series inaugural season but his string of consistent top finishes was enough to comfortably win the 12-race championship by 103 points over DJ Kennington. ROGER TEPPER 2008 Scott Steckly earned his first career national stock car championship in 2008. The Milverton Ontario racer piloted his Dodge to four victories in the series 13 events. They came at Cayuga Motor Speedway (the track s name was tweaked for 2008) Barrie Speedway (2) and Autodrome St-Eustache. Three of Steckly s wins came in the series first four events his quick start meant that he was 26 NASCAR.CA lowing his win at Riverside but ended up a still staggering 167 markers in the final tally. 2011 Scott Steckly joined Andrew Ranger on the list of two-time Canadian NASCAR champions in 2011. His series-high three wins (at Mosport Speedway Vernon BC s Motoplex Speedway formerly Sun Valley Motor Speedway and Riverside International Speedway) left him with a 79-point winning margin over Kennington in the final points despite DJ winning the finale at Kawartha Speedway. As he had in 2008 Steckly led the championship in wireto-wire fashion. But this performance wasn t the dominant show of force that Steckly s first title run had been. Rather it was earned thanks to consistent top finishes while many of his contenders suffered one or more disappointing results which put an end to their hopes of earning the NASCAR crown. Kennington Andrew Ranger and part-time road racing specialist Robin Buck each earned two victories in 2011 with single race wins going to Don Thomson Jr. Mark Dilley and Pete Shepherd III. L.P Dumoulin took . part in eight races and was crowned the series top rookie. 2011 Scott Steckly in victory lane at Riverside. 2012 Andrew Ranger and Scott Steckly entered 2012 with two NASCAR championships apiece. By the time the season was done DJ Kennington joined that prestigious club. Kennington won an incredible seven of the series 12 races en route to the title but it wasn t a slam dunk by any means. J.R. Fitzpatrick won the season opener at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and led the points through the first three races. But that third race on the half-mile oval at Mosport Speedway started an incredible run of wins that stands to this day. On the heels of that victory Kennington s winning streak continued at Delaware Speedway Motoplex Speedway Edmonton City Centre Airport and Saskatoon s Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. Even after five wins in a row he only led Fitzpatrick by 41 points. And while Fitzpatrick never re-took the lead in the championship it took consecutive victories in the season s two final races Riverside and Kawartha to seal the deal with Kennington securing his second championship by just 27 points. 2012 Kennington won a record five-consecutive races en route to the 2012 championship. 2013 With three racers tied with two championships each the race was on to see who would earn the bragging rights as the series first three-time champion. From the outset you got the feeling that Steckly or Kennington (Ranger made just three series starts in 2013) would reach three before anyone else notched their first. And that s exactly how it played out. Kennington was the model of consistency earning 11 top-ten results in the series 12 starts including a victory at the GP3R. Steckly would notch just nine top-tens but his four victories (Motoplex Speedway ACMS Autodrome St-Eustache and Kawartha) were enough to edge Kennington by just two points in the chase for the title. The result was all the more impressive given that Steckly opened the season with finishes of 24th and 21st respectively at CTMP and Delaware and sat a lowly seventh in the standings a third of the way through the schedule. But after his three-race midseason winning streak Steckly was in the lead and engaged in a battle for the ages with Ken2013 Scott Steckly s four victories were enough to edge Kennington by just two points for the title. 2010 Up until 2010 DJ Kennington had never won a national title in CASCAR or NASCAR despite many runner-up points finishes. That came to an end in 2010. The Dodge driver from St. Thomas Ontario was the man to beat on the ovals and not even Andrew Ranger s impressive road course results could keep Kennington from the title. In eight oval starts Kennington won five of them after starting on the pole at six events. The hot streak started at Kennington s home track Delaware Speedway and continued throughout the season producing wins at Autodrome St-Eustache Auto Clearing Motor Speedway (Saskatoon Saskatchewan) Barrie Speedway and Riverside International Speedway. Kennington s final championship margin of victory over his close friend J.R. Fitzpatrick was 87 points. Another highlight of 2010 was the series first appearance at Toronto s IndyCar event under the NASCAR banner. Ranger won the race. Hathaway s runner-up points result was the best of his career. Adding his three victories in 2015 to his impressive total Steckly finished 2015 tied with Kennington in second place with career wins at 19. Andrew Ranger led that category with 20 at the end of 2015. tory announced he was stepping back as a full-time racer on Canada s NASCAR tour. Hathaway ended the season with a hard-fought well-deserved victory in the season finale at Kawartha Speedway. At the other end of the age spectrum relative series newcomer Alex Labb garnered some serious attention by winning a race and capturing four pole positions. NASCAR Pinty s Series rookie Kevin Lacroix was equally as impressive recording two wins and a pair of pole positions. All of these things were impressive but the big headlines related to the 2016 season were written by 16-year-old Cayden Lapcevich. He turned the NASCAR world upside down when he (briefly) became the youngest NASCAR Touring Series champion in history. Lapcevich earned three race victories and never finished a race outside of the top ten. Battling throughout the year with Andrew Ranger in the point standings Lapcevich moved to the top of the charts with his victory at Riverside Speedway eventually stretching his advantage to 54 points in the final tally. Although he was relegated to a runner-up result in the championship standings Ranger nevertheless managed to increase his lead in career NPS victories currently topping the record books with 22 race wins. PERRY NELSON 2014 If the person engraving the names on the championship trophy was tired of etching the same three drivers names on the award he got a reprieve in 2014 when Louis-Philippe Dumoulin broke through. The Trois-Rivi res Quebec racer made a dramatic move to another team prior to the start of the season and it paid off with his first NASCAR drivers points title. In what was the second-closest championship finish in series history Dumoulin beat out J.R. Fitzpatrick by just three points. Dumoulin s Dodge went to victory lane at Saskatoon s Auto Clearing Motor Speedway and at his cherished hometrack at the GP3R. Fitzpatrick captured three wins along the way including both events at CTMP and in the season finale at Kawartha but it wasn t enough to overcome Dumoulin s string of consistent top finishes. Another notable win was Donald Chisholm s at Riverside Inter2014 L.P Dumoulin was the . picture of consistency en route to his championship. 2015 The winning margin at the end of the 2013 championship was two points and the 2014 title gap was three points. Sticking to the pattern it s no surprise that in 2015 Scott Steckly would win his record-setting fourth Canadian NASCAR championship... by four points. Gary Klutt stunned the field by winning the season opener at CTMP from the pole. Recently announced as a member of the NASCAR Next program which shines a light on the sport s future stars Klutt is just one of a new crop of NASCAR Pinty s Series racers who looks set to make an impact. Another driver who has yet to win a NASCAR championship but is one of the top contenders Jason Hathaway won the season s second race at Autodrome Chaudi re. Hathaway closed the season strong by winning during the Labour Day NASCAR Camping World Truck Series weekend at CTMP and 2016 Canada s NASCAR series welcomed a new title sponsor in 2016 when Pinty s Delicious Foods signed on replacing Canadian Tire in that role. The momentum continued to build when it was announced that the newly-rebranded NASCAR Pinty s Series would make a return to the streets of Toronto as the Saturday feature race on the Honda Indy Toronto weekend. The event was dubbed the Pinty s Grand Prix of Toronto. The NASCAR Next program now in its seventh year is an initiative designed to develop young racing talent into a complete marketable package. The program not only advances the driver s ontrack potential but also educates the class members in matters of media and other profession-related skills. Lapcevich joins a list whose alumnus includes such current NASCAR stars as Kyle Larson Chase Elliott Erik Jones and Ryan Blaney. It came as a bit of a surprise admitted Lapcevich. I was laying on my bed doing homework when I got a phone call from NASCAR saying I d been selected. Being chosen to be a member of the NASCAR Next program really gave a boost to my confidence and made me even more determined to get back behind the wheel and go for another championship. He added with a smile The hardest part was keeping it a secret for two months Upon his mid-May arrival in Charlotte for the NASCAR Next announcement Lapcevich along with his fellow class members was introduced to the media and given a tour of the Fox Sports Racing studios. The behind-the-scenes technical aspect of the sport s television production was explained and then the nine class members were prepared and sent in front of the cameras to film a NASCAR Next promotional video and to be part of a NASCAR Race Hub segment. Given some time to absorb the experience the classmates then sat down to lunch with such notable on-air personalities as Larry McReynolds and Adam Alexander. It was an amazing experience just being in the same room as the other NASCAR Next drivers. You realize that they re all champions and you re actually one of them. Concluded the young Canadian star I think that this recognition demonstrates that we re going in the right direction so we ll see where it goes from here. This program has opened up so many doors for other drivers I hope that it can do the same thing for me. Hathaway received the award on stage during the NASCAR Touring Series Night of Champions on December 10 at the Charlotte (NC) Convention Center at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. DRIVE FOR DIVERSITY ARMANI WILLIAMS In 2017 the NASCAR Pinty s Series will have a competitor associated with the sanctioning body s Drive for Diversity program. Armani Williams from Detroit Michigan comes to the series after participating in the Drive for Diversity combine last fall. Williams was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder as an infant. Williams has experience racing in the ARCA Truck Series and will drive CBRT s No. 28 in a joint effort between that team and DJK Racing. Two-time NASCAR Pinty s Series champ DJ Kennington will serve as Williams driver coach teaching the 16-year-old the ropes. DJK Racing will also provide technical insight and assist with race car preparation for each of Williams six planned oval outings. Armani is a tremendous story said NASCAR Pinty s Series director Cherie Putnam. He was diagnosed with autism at two years of age but he hasn t let that stop him. He works hard at raising autism awareness and proving that people with autism can lead successful and fulfilling lives. Williams brings solid credentials to this new undertaking. He began competitive karting at age eight and progressed quickly up the ranks competing in and winning multiple series championships in the mid-west. Once coined the dirtiest sport in America NASCAR now boasts the three largest green programs in sports renewable energy recycling and clean air. As a result 75 percent of NASCAR fans now say they believe the sport cares for the environment and are aware of NASCAR Green according to Custom Environment-Related Tracker commissioned by NASCAR and conducted by Toluna in July 2013. Since its inception NASCAR has recycled more than 20 million bottles and cans 600 000 race tires and enough oil to power the Empire State Building for one year. It has also planted enough trees to completely offset carbon emissions for all NASCAR national series racing for the past five years of NASCAR Green plus the next 18 years. NASCAR has the largest renewable energy stadium project in the world the solar farm at Pocono (PA) Raceway that powers more than 250 homes in the region. The sport also features teams such as Roush Fenway Racing which recycle as much as 96 percent of each race car. For more information go to www.NASCAR.com Green or follow NASCARGreen.
