While I wasn t sure what their answer would be I admit I was a little surprised by their answer. At Sprouts the biggest challenge is making sure we stay true to who we are and what we stand for as we continue to grow said Diana Lucas the store s vice president of Vitamins and Body Care. No matter how large the company becomes the core goal is to ensure that Sprouts is delivering on its passion to inspire educate and empower every person to eat healthier and live a better life (see article on page 26). This reminded me of a recent Building Better Brands column written by marketing expert Darrin Duber-Smith for Vitamin Retailer s sister magazine Nutrition Industry Executive (NIE). According to Duber-Smith I shouldn t be surprised by Sprouts response. In this hyper-competitive global environment brand differentiation is becoming an increasingly more difficult task but marketers must nonetheless strive to distinguish themselves in a positive way he wrote in the July August column for NIE magazine (visit if you would like to read the article). Duber-Smith stressed that the brand strategy should really stem from the company s mission statement which ideally should tell us much about the organization s purpose and its scope. He added that brand development begins with establishing a distinct brand identity for the types of products that marketers wish to promote. Perhaps it is best to think of identity in personified W terms. People have distinctive personalities and so too should the brands that target them and so marketers must first understand the nature of their market before establishing the brand personality he wrote. He stressed that simply being natural or effective isn t really enough in this era of branding. He suggested establishing a number of brand attributes with a focus on one or two key benefits in an effort to position the brand in the mind of the consumer. Duber-Smith added that once the proper level of awareness has been achieved and consumers have formed the desired attitudes about the brand marketers must continually reinforce the message through various elements of promotion including advertising public relations personal selling sales promotion direct marketing as well as other methods. Elevated levels of brand equity within the natural products industry have led to hundreds of billions of dollars in acquisitions over the years. Burt s Bees Tom s of Maine and most recently Whole Foods Markets are high profile examples of this he said. The owner of last year s Retailer of the Year winner Kris Wear of World of Nutrition with one store in Nampa ID said she first envisioned her store to be like the TV show Cheers where everyone knows your name and you are treated like a friend. There the focus is on personal and community relationships. Sprouts with a total store count of 280 and more than 26 000 team members said its mission statement is to inspire educate and empower every person to eat healthier and live a better life. Its goal is to provide healthy products at affordable prices. So no matter if you are a single store or vast chain like Sprouts staying true to who you are and what you stand for might be the most important goal. Supplements that are good for the skin and for anti-aging greatly overlap with supplements that are good for us in general said Cheryl Myers chief of education and scientific affairs at EuroPharma Inc. in Wisconsin. The skin--the largest organ of the body--can be one of the most accurate (and obviously visible) reflections of inflammation and oxidative stress. Good supplements for the skin nourish it with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection and help keep skin hydrated firm and evenly toned. Due to their benefits supplements for skin health are beginning to gain momentum in the U.S. market which are influenced by various factors. T BY NICHOLAS SARACENO drinks ... Consumers are looking to more natural forms of anti-aging options--instead of jumping to elective surgeries they are moving toward natural preventative measures. Media outlets and other modes of communication have provided not only the consumer with additional knowledge but the rest of supply chain as well including manufacturers. As a result they have uncovered relationships between skin and general health. I think a lot of it has to do with a greater awareness among the public and definitely among manufacturers that focusing on only topical approaches to skin care only solves half of the equation noted Myers. Clearly there s a direct connection with inflammatory diets environmental conditions sun and wind exposure and genetic predispositions to the health of the skin. So individuals and manufacturers have learned that nutrients work on the inside to protect the skin the same way that they may protect the heart brain eyes and liver. The difference is that we more immediately notice changes to the skin especially when we expect changes for the better. And that s a challenge to manufacturers-- people want to see a difference after beginning a supplemental regimen targeted to helping heal damage to the skin. the skin s appearance and overall resilience said Myers. Ageless Radiance addresses the inflammation and oxidative stress I mentioned earlier that manifest as changes in pigmentation firmness luminosity and redness. It features a clinically studied nutrient blend the L emerelle Complex. Developed in France it has been shown to improve skin radiance by 62 percent and skin firmness by 55 percent. Rise in Fame Caring for one s skin has become an upward trend but why is this the case According to Monique Shide brand manager with Florida-based Reserveage Nutrition (a division of Twinlab Consolidation Corporation) a combination of solid research and technological advances can be credited. There is more research today than ever before validating the positive effects of natural compounds for beautifying skin she said. Many advances in technology and the sciences have resulted in more bioavailable forms as well as more clinical evidence on their performance. The other attraction for both retailers and consumers is the wide variety of delivery systems for these supplements from capsules to powders to 8 VITAMIN RETAILER There is also Reserveage Nutrition s Collagen Booster a supplement that provides a double benefit according to Shide as it supports skin radiance and joint health. This can be attributed to BioCell Collagen and hyaluronic acid the latter of which supports hydration and is produced by the body naturally. State of the Market As the care for sustaining a nutritious lifestyle is continuing to increase among consumers so is the desire for skin maintenance. The beauty-fromwithin trend is in a current stage of positive development with signs of more potential for the future. Beauty-from-within is still experiencing significant growth said Shide. The segment is evolving. The once small beauty category is expanding to overall wellness--consumers are becoming more educated on all the benefits of collagen much more than it s good for your skin. With more brands entering the category it s important to continue to educate consumers on the importance of science-backed traceable ingredients. The deal to acquire Pacific Foods of Oregon will be financed with debt Campbell said. The Tualatin OR-based maker of organic foods generated revenue of 218 million over the last year. Campbell the nearly 150-year-old company known for canned goods has struggled with changing consumer tastes and is expected to post declining sales for a third consecutive year. The Camden NJ-based company has stumbled with moves into carrot farming and protein drink production since its 2012 purchase of Californiabased Bolthouse Farms. The acquisition of Pacific Foods will give it more products in a fastergrowing category according to Ken Shea an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. Organic is definitely where the customer is going he said. Speaking before an audience of 115 Congressional staffers and guests Pearce shared personal stories and discussed the role dietary supplements have played in supporting peak athletic performance throughout her career as well as the unique nutritional needs of her fellow players and family. A three-time Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time FIFA Women s World Cup Champion Pearce is the second mostcapped soccer player in U.S. and world history and a long-time dietary supplement user. One thing I m always focusing on is my fitness Pearce told the audience. If it weren t for the proper supplements I don t know if my level of play would be where it is today. Before highlighting her supplement T regimen Pearce revealed that she questioned dietary supplements when she started training as a professional athlete. I began looking to trusted sources of information such as team nutritionists and took a good look at product labels she shared. As I transitioned from college playing to the national team I realized that the foods I was eating were not enough. The right supplements give you something extra. They helped me prepare for each training session and game. Pearce highlighted the critical role of consumer education and responsible supplement usage stressing the importance of discussing dietary supplements with health care professionals and identifying companies that manufacture legitimate products. Pearce also echoed industry s collective message that dietary supplements are not a one-size-fits-all solution for optimal nutrition. Focus on what you need to eat she said. The food is the fuel. Through its adoption of birch The Actives Factory helps ABC expand its nonprofit educational mission and keep its unique HerbMedPro database updated with the latest scientific and clinical research on this traditionally used medicinal tree. HerbMedPro is a comprehensive interactive online database that provides access to important scientific and clinical research data on the uses and health effects of approximately 250 herbs. We are delighted to adopt birch as part of the Adopt-an-Herb initiative said T Brian Garhofer founder of The Actives Factory. Birch is a classic example of everything old is new again. Indigenous cultures have known about its healing properties for hundreds of years but the insights gained in modern times from biochemical cellular and clinical research has really allowed us to understand how the compounds in birch bark work and apply these insights across a spectrum of applications to improve health and wellbeing. The Actives Factory and its principal Brian Garhofer have compiled an enormous amount of scientific research on the birch tree particularly its outer bark and useful chemical compounds that have been investigated for their potential health benefits said ABC Founder and Executive Director Mark Blumenthal. ABC is deeply grateful for The Actives Factory s generous and supportive adoption of birch that allows ABC to continue to develop HerbMedPro into a unique and highly useful medicinal plant database. When I started to become interested in herbal medicine in Switzerland it was mainly the birch leaf that was appreciated for its therapeutic benefits commented Stefan Gafner ABC s chief science officer. But more recent research on birch bark extract and its triterpenes in particular for topical applications is very compelling. I am pleased that all the scientific research data on this botanical is now available in the HerbMedPro database. The study led by Dr. Scott Read and Associate Professor Golo Ahlenstiel demonstrated that zinc naturally inhibits the inflammatory and antiviral effects of interferon lambda 3 (IFN-3) a protein strongly associated with tissue damage in chronic liver disease. Lead author of the study Read said the study provides the first evidence N that zinc can act as a potent and specific inhibitor of IFN-3 in the context of viral infections such as hepatitis C and influenza. We have demonstrated that zinc inhibits numerous facets of the liver s immune response to viruses that may be mediated by IFN-3. Zinc interferes with IFN-3 binding to the interferon lambda receptor which results in decreased antiviral activity and increased viral replication both in vitro and in vivo. Interestingly zinc also blocks the inflammatory activity of IFN3 which has been strongly linked to accelerated progression to liver cirrhosis in viral and non-viral liver disease explained Read. Our data suggests that serum zinc levels in patients with chronic hepatitis C are genetically predetermined by the IFN-3 polymorphism confirming the inhibitory role of zinc in vivo. The data highlights the potential for zinc to be used as a simple and effective treatment against acute and chronic inflammation in the liver. Ahlenstiel and his team are now working towards a therapeutic intervention for IFN-3-mediated chronic disease. For more information visit Common Household Chemicals Lead to Birth Defects in Mice Research Finds A new study at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) and the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech has found a connection between common household chemicals and birth defects. Known as quaternary ammonium compounds or quats the chemicals are often used as disinfectants and preservatives in household and personal products such as cleaners laundry detergent fabric softener shampoo conditioner and eye drops. The research demonstrated a link between quats and neural tube birth defects in both mice and rats. These chemicals are regularly used in the home hospital public spaces and swimming pools said Terry Hrubec associate professor of anatomy at the VCOM-Virginia campus and research assistant professor in the veterinary college s Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology. Most people are exposed on a regular basis. Hrubec investigated the effect of two commonly used quats alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. These are often listed on ingredient lists as ADBAC and DDAC respectively and are valued for their antimicrobial and antistatic properties as well as their ability to lower surface tension. Hrubec found that exposure to these chemicals resulted in neural tube birth defects--the same birth defect as spina bifida and anencephaly in humans. 18 VITAMIN RETAILER Birth defects were seen when both males and females were exposed as well as when only one parent was exposed said Hrubec who is first author on the study and holds both a doctor of veterinary medicine degree and PhD from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. The fact that birth defects could be seen when only the father was exposed means that we need to expand our scope of prenatal care to include the father. Hrubec found that mice and rats did not even need to be dosed with the chemicals to see the effect. Her research shows that simply using quat-based cleaners in the same room as the mice was enough to cause birth defects. We also observed increased birth defects in rodents for two generations after stopping exposure Hrubec added. An earlier study in Hrubec s laboratory found that these chemicals led to reproductive declines in mice. Follow-up research found that quats were decreasing sperm counts in males and ovulation in females. The research raises the possibility of quats contributing to human infertility which has been on the rise in recent decades. We are asked all of the time You see your results in mice. How do you know that it s toxic in humans Hrubec said. Our research on mice and rats shows that these chemicals affect the embryonic development of these animals. Since rodent research is the gold standard in the biomedical sciences this raises a big red flag that these chemicals may be toxic to humans as well. Quaternary ammonium compounds were introduced in the 1950s and 1960s before the standardization of toxicity studies. Chemical manufacturers conducted some toxicity studies on the compounds during this period but they were never published. Today the chemicals are regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Hrubec noted that an epidemiological study could determine whether people who have a high rate of exposure such as health care workers or restaurant servers have a more difficult time becoming pregnant or have a greater likelihood of having children with neural tube birth defects but no such study has been conducted to date. For more information visit WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM AUGUST 2017 The New Age of Probiotics The realm of probiotics has grown so expansively research and development are likely going to continue to accelerate. Here s how to keep this category lively. By Lisa Schofield h utopia ... a community of diverse entities that work synergistically together with each individual performing specialized functions for the greater good and sustenance of the whole and a community that bonds together to fight any invaders who dare darken the threshold. This is not a new cable TV show. It s what the gastrointestinal (GI) systems probiotic communities should be like. And this is the goal of many researchers suppliers and brand marketers to help people of all ages achieve. The prevailing theory is that when that community (also often called the microbiome) is wholesome healthy and thriving so too will its host. In 2015 Ashley Harris founder and CEO of LoveBug Probiotics in New York cited that the U.S. retail probiotic supplement market was 3.8 billion. It is expected to grow by 37 percent by 2020 which is very impressive. With increasing frequency more research is A published and discussed focusing on linking imbalances in the microbiome with various health conditions. In the last few years there have been major advances in our understanding of the benefit of certain probiotic strains and improved scientific delivery systems for more effective results she commented. Unlike other categories probiotics are relevant for all people of all ages. Natalie Lamb technical advisor of Florida-based Bio-Kult (Protexin) explained that balanced gut flora is imperative throughout life to help support healthy digestive and immune function. Newborns gut flora is impacted by that contained within the mother and human mode of delivery (feeding) is important to help the baby develop a strong immune system in his or her first two years of life. From there an individual s gut flora is continually shaped and influenced by diet environment and lifestyle. The balance and diversity of gut microbes has been shown to be very different in elderly individuals living in indigenous communities compared to those in the modern world she pointed out. Harris agreed elaborating that research has shown that giving fetuses a head start on gut health by exposing them to various probiotic strains in utero leads to stronger immune systems better digestive health and other benefits as they grow up. Further she noted During birth babies are exposed to even more of their mothers helpful bacteria as they travel through the birth canal. Unfortunately Harris continued many obstacles stand in the way of young children s gut health. C-sections can negatively impact the baby s balance of good bacteria and 33 percent of U.S. births are C-sections. On top of that many expectant moms are dosed with antibiotics (which kill good as well as bad bacteria) while in the delivery room which can further disturb a WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM AUGUST 2014 20 VITAMIN RETAILER Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 baby s microbiome and create an imbalance. And in today s society more than ever toddlers and older children receive more antibiotics than any other age group just when their bodies should be working on building a good gut-health foundation. Research over the past decade has shown the importance of foods fermented by probiotics contribute powerfully to building and maintaining gut health according to Dustin Huff vice president of sales and marketing with White Mountain Foods in Texas. Historically as societies age and mature fermented foods become more prevalent. This is a direct result of the trace minerals that probiotics provide during their life cycle which are no longer available from the regular food supply due to the gradual depletion of the soil a result of continuous planting and the row crop chemical fertilizer growing method. Several sources asserted that an imbalanced or incomplete microbiome (the totality of probiotics in the gut) is now being understood by medical science to be a causative factor in many digestive issues food allergies and sensitivities inflammation autoimmune disorders autism spectrum disorders and chronic infections. The healthy bacteria world in the gut creates overall good health notably a more resilient and protective immune system. Did you know that the World Health Organization (WHO) did a comprehensive study that found older people require a very unique set of micronutrients that are not met by conventional multivitamins asked Kiran Krishnan formulator of Probiogen in Arizona. Two spore-forming strains for example help support good health in seniors (younger and older). Bacillus coagulans HC is shown to reduce gas bloating and digestive discomfort while Bacillus subtilis HU58 has the ability to fight off harmful and opportunistic bacteria. This strain also produces nattokinase and supports healthy immunity. These are both in the new Probiogen Adults 55 Probiotic with Multivitamin. Further studies said Harris are currently being conducted to examine the role probiotics play in treating and preventing common ailments including diarrhea constipation dermatitis eczema and respiratory problems to name a few. For Lamb the most exciting development in the probiotic category is the AUGUST 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM sheer increase in the number of probiotic studies in conditions outside of the digestive system. New probiotic sales have been increased for use in those with obesity and neurological problems in particular she observed. And as more good reports about New probiotic sales have been increased for use in those with obesity and neurological problems in particular. -- Natalie Lamb Technical Adivsor Bio-Kult (Protexin) specific probiotics supporting specific health areas are reported favorably in mass media and news probiotics are now understood by consumers to be good for you. Sky Garmon marketing associate with Jarrow Formulas in California observed As probiotics transition from the natural foods sector into the mainstream there is obviously going to be a large number of potential consumers learning about them. This transition has not been without its drawbacks however. The use of the term probiotic has expanded beyond traditional dietary supplements and is being promoted in food and drink products that in reality may not confer a health benefit. Most consumers are aware of probiotics knowing that they are beneficial to the body. This is a great start but there remains a lot of facts they don t know and should and there are also several rather persistent misconceptions that should be cleared up. Garmon said that first consumers should know the official definition of probiotics as per FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) WHO Probiotics are live microorganisms which when adminis- tered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. It s short and simple but most important serves as the basis of understanding what can certainly be an extremely complex category. Probiotics as with some supplements are also naturally occurring in foods such as yogurt kefir and fermented foods so therefore said Huff are also available in many forms for retailers to sell. Consumers should learn to zero in on the amount of living bacteria present in the product (food or supplement) he advised and should understand what CFU represents. White Mountain s most recent test by a third-party lab revealed a probiotic content of over 100 billion CFU per 8-oz. serving he commented. Foods that have been fermented by microbial action (yogurt beer bread pickles soy sauce fish sauce tempeh vinegar wine etc.) become what are known as superfoods as they are much more nutritious than their ingredients. Why probiotics should be a must for all consumers Huff added is that all human beings must have a sufficient and well-organized community of gut bacteria to efficiently and properly digest and absorb food and maintain an adequate B vitamin and trace mineral source (the bacteria provide these nutrients during their lives and thus serve as the body s major and steady source). Consumers should also know that their gut bacteria population can be depleted through antibiotic therapy extended illness and of course aging. In Lamb s view the most common misconception is that probiotics reinoculate the gut continuously whereas in fact probiotics are generally considered transient. The strains contained within Bio-Kult probiotics are considered transient colonizers they have been shown to have a beneficial effect in the intestines during consumption which creates an environment favorable for the growth of resident beneficial bacteria. Several of the strains in BioKult she described have been shown in vitro to have good colonizing capabilities. The second most common misconception Lamb pointed out is that all probiotics need to be kept refrigerated. Some modern techniques mean refrigeration may not always be required she emphasized. Highquality probiotic products should guarantee viability to the end of the shelf VITAMIN RETAILER 21 The New Age of Probiotics life as opposed to at the time of manufacture. Krishnan s consumer research found several misconceptions consumers have about probiotics that retailers can clear up. First is that more strains and higher doses is better. There are no studies that show that 20 billion is better than 10 billion or 50 billion is better than 20 billion he stated. Unfortunately those are marketing tricks and huge scientific assumptions. Most probiotic studies are done on a single strain at doses between 5 and 7 billion CFUs per day. Another is that refrigerated probiotics are better than non-refrigerated. I hear this all the time but it is completely false he said. Echoing Lamb he underscored that if the strains cannot survive at room temperature on the shelf and must be refrigerated to main- tain viability how will they survive human in vivo temperature of 98 degrees and a pH of 1 (very acid) in the body All probiotics survive and land in the gut to colonize happily ever after. This is a big assumption Krishnan stressed. Large-scale studies on the most common probiotic strains on the market have shown that 95 percent or more of probiotic products do not contain strains that can survive the passage through the stomach acid then bile salts and pancreatic enzymes to get to the site of action and colonize there he explained. He advised that retailers (and consumers) should look for products that have been verified by a third-party lab to survive gastric passage. Although not a misconception more than an obscure fact generating supporting and or sustaining a healthy community of good bacteria is not just about taking extra probiotics than what can be consumed in the diet--it s about knowing what to avoid that will help decimate part of the population chiefly sugar. Sugar is a key factor in creating an imbalance in the microbiome Harris said. Sugar feeds the bad bacteria in our guts so it is important to take probiotic without sugar. Knowing what to look for and how to understand the label is important to curtail confusion according to Garmon. Some manufacturers want you to believe that the best probiotic supplements are measured by how many billions of CFUs (colony-forming units) of bacteria they ve managed to stuff into a capsule. It s much more important to have the right balance of clinically documented strains she asserted. It s important for the strains in a probiotic product to have been sufficiently characterized and clinically studied. Some probiotic manufacturers sometimes list only the genus and species names in the supplement facts panel leaving out the specific strains that are actually present in the product. Products Bio-Kult said Lamb is a unique multispecies multi-strain probiotic with 14 strains of beneficial bacteria. Each strain has unique properties and health benefits a multi-strain probiotic should therefore exert more positive benefits on a wider range of gastrointestinal complaints. All the formula s strains have shown in vitro that they are able to work synergistically together. A recent review by Chapman et al concluded that multi-strain probiotics appear to show greater efficacy than single strains including strains that are components of the mixtures themselves. We therefore believe that it is the greater number of strains in a product that are more important than the dosage. Bio-Kult probiotics have a guaranteed count until the end of the two-year shelf life they don t need to be kept refrigerated and are backed by data to show they are able to survive the harsh acidity of the stomach. White Mountain Bulgarian Yogurt is a traditional immune system-supporting food described Huff. The yogurt is fermented a full 24 hours which greatly reduces the lactose content of the milk and results in a very high live-culture count. The bacteria help break down food making nutrients more available for absorption through the intestinal walls as well as fight infestation by other possibly harmful bacteria yeasts and viruses he said. Jarrow Formulas probiotics feature high-quality and clinically documented strains that have been developed through years of research according to WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM AUGUST 2017 22 VITAMIN RETAILER Go to probioticsinternational for info about this advertiser The New Age of Probiotics Garmon. Its Jarro-Dophilus brand has numerous product options for women pets children and digestive support. LoveBug Probiotic formulations for adults babies children and pre-natal contain multi-strains including L. rhamnosus GG (the top studied strain with 800 publications according to Harris). What sets LoveBug apart from the competition is our main product feature BIO-tract a patented delivery technology scientifically developed to get the microorganisms past the stomach acid barrier and to their final destination in the digestive tract where they do their health-boosting work. This makes it 15 times more effective than standard capsules chewables and powders she stated. The Probiogen line is comprised of seven formulas each offering specialized blends of herbs vitamins and minerals that are targeted to different needs. They include Daily Digestive Balance Women s Vitality Probiotic Men s Vitality Probiotic Adult s 55 Probiotic with Multivitamin Weight Management Probiotic Allergy Defense Probiotic as well as Stress & Mood Balance Probiotic. Each Probiogen probiotic formula uses Smart Spore Technology and DNA-verified spore probiotics and are dairy soy and gluten free vegetarian and nonGMO (genetically modified organism). According to Krishnan spores have several strengths chiefly Spores are nature s true probiotics. They can survive the harrowing journey to the gut ... the site of all the action. Further they are stable and can be stored at room temperature without effecting viability. They are also capable of surviving the low pH of the gastric barrier. Spores are less concentrated in the gut than many other strains so a lower CFU (colony forming units) is needed to be effective. As consumers continue to learn about probiotics and the microbiome they will be motivated to seek out the types of probiotic products they need. And research continues at a fast-paced clip showing how varied strains directly impact specific health areas beyond digestion and immune support. You will see more combination products containing certain probiotic strains for condition-specific support so expect the probiotic community (of products) to flourish throughout your supplement department. She said Bluebonnet only offers products that have undergone a four-step purification process that virtually eliminates heavy metals PCBs and dioxins as well as that unpleasant fishy taste and odor typically associated with marine fish oils. Weinhardt also noted that Bluebonnet specifically selects their fish oil such as their Natural Omega-3 Artic Cod Liver Oil with environmental sustainability in mind. Our cod liver oil is selected from Iceland s marine habitat to ensure environmental management and sustain- ability she said. Iceland s government has a sophisticated quality assurance program overseeing its fisheries and its environmentally sustainable practices are beyond reproach enabling Bluebonnet to provide products that are second to none in quality as well as ecological preservation and sustainability. Additionally the company s EPAX formulas are sourced from Peru--and not only does Peru have a highly sophisticated governmental fishery quality assurance program but they also have an unrivaled surveillance system to address sustainability such as controlling the minimum size and number of juvenile fish caught earning EPAX the Friend of the Sea (FOS) certification in 2009. Weinhardt added that there are hundreds of studies demonstrating the benefits of EFAs from fish. In fact she said the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends everyone eat fish particularly fatty fish at WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM MAY 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM AUGUST 2014 Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence 1994-2014 least twice a week. They also suggest that while foods are the best source of omega-3s in the diet fish oil supplements are recommended for those who do not like fish. Getting Past That Fishy Taste While nothing negative has been heard about EFAs from Dan Sobon store manager of Seagirt Natural Market Sea Girt NJ he is quick to point out that customers in their 40s 50s and 60s have bad childhood memories about cod liver oil. Therefore he recommends enteric coated capsules. It s an easier sell he said. As far as convenience capsules sell better than liquid. Other ways to avoid the fishy aftertaste are plant-sourced EFAs. For example plant-based formulas such as Bluebonnet s PlantBased Omega 3-6-9 soft gels are derived from flaxseed evening primrose oil and borage oils. Bluebonnet also carries Natural Omega-3 Vegetarian DHA soft gels that come in 100 or 200 mg. They provide a pharmaceutical grade vegetable-based docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in a natural triglyceride form derived from marine algae. Other Bluebonnet EFA formulas derived from plant sources include Plant-sourced algae (e.g. Life s DHA) that provide a pharmaceutical grade vegetable-based docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in a natural triglyceride form derived from marine algae. Evening Primrose Oil 500 mg and 1 300 mg soft gels Certified Organic Flaxseed Oil 1 000 mg soft gels Clarinol CLA 1 000 mg soft gels from safflower oil Trending--Vegetarian-friendly Vegetarian-aware consumers are becoming increasingly popular and now make up 25 percent of the U.S. population said Bluebonnet s Weinhardt. That means more than 70 million people--or one in four Americans--are making vegetarian-aware choices each day. And 65 percent of these consumers acknowledge the benefits of taking regular dietary supplements. Another vegetarian and vegan option for obtaining the EFA alpha linoleic acid (ALA) is chia seed. It s very attracAUGUST 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM tive for a growing number of consumers who are opting for plant-based food options over meat animal options said Sandra Gillot CEO of Benexia in Santiago Chile. We feel that this sector is going to continue to show robust and accelerated growth. Benexia has 15 years [experience] working in chia with people and growers that are committed to this crop as well as being devoted to the sustainable development of the agricultural activities. Benexia in turn has been committed to our growers. Thanks to this today we offer a very strong supply chain for our customers. Benexia has just launched a brandnew consumer line called Seeds of Wellness (SOW) that contain various chia products such as Chia Pasta--Gluten- and wheat-free pasta high in nutrition. This pasta is a high-power blend of corn rice and chia flours suitable for everyone. Our gluten-free Chia Pasta is also high in healthy omega3 ALA and fiber said Gillot. So yes pasta is back in the diet Chia Milk--Giving nut milks and other dairy-free options a run for their smoothness Chia Milk provides the highest omega-3 ALA than any other cow s milk alternative. Chia Shake--Chia protein for healthy shakes that the whole family can enjoy--whether for breakfast snacks or desserts. Chia Shake features defatted pure chia powder providing concentrated chia protein 40 percent as well as omega-3 ALA and fiber. Perfect for workout days. The Chia Baker--A chia ingredient for homemade breads and other baked goods such as pizza doughs muffins and even bagels. Desserts such as cookies pastries and cakes can be eaten guilt-free with this product said Gillot. Our chia flour is made with pure chia powder containing protein fiber and omega-3 ALA. Chia Crunch--Naturally toasted black chia seed for any recipe where the satisfying crunch factor enhances the taste experience. Salads mixed in veggie sides or fruit bowls used on top of casseroles it can also be eaten by itself. It offers 5 grams of omega-3 ALA per portion as well as protein and fiber. Chia Oil--Non-vegetable high-stability oil for any recipe or homemade condiment. Chia Oil is cold-pressed and contains 63 percent of omega-3 ALA. Our high-stability Chia Oil lasts longer than many other oils due to our proprietary Ox Blocker technology that thwarts oxidation naturally said Gillot. Flavored Chia Oil--Non-vegetable high-stability oil with very high omega3 ALA content is perfect for dipping sauces and for drizzling on salads fruits and vegetables. Wake Up--Either white or black chia for breakfast smoothies cereals and muffins as well as for pancakes and waffles. Ready to use Wake Up offers five grams of omega 3 ALA per portion plus protein and fiber. Monique Wellise national sales manager with Washington-based Natural Factors agreed that chia is a nutritional powerhouse that continues to experience aggressive growth in the industry. They are an excellent source of fiber lignans protein and omega-3ALA. While they are a source of omega3 ALA they are not a direct source of the omega-3 EPA and DHA that has been the subject of so much clinical research she noted. That said they are a great addition to the diet that can be sprinkled on any snack or meal for a healthful addition. Wellise said she has also seen an expansion of products offering algal sources of EPA and DHA which is great news for vegetarians and vegans. Until fairly recently algal sources offered DHA only for products that were highly DHA dominant. New strains of algae are now available that also deliver meaningful levels of EPA. Natural Factors Whole Earth and Sea Marine Algae-3 is one such product that is performing well. We can expect to see much innovation in the algae space Wellise added. Qualitas Health in Imperial TX also provides consumers with omega-3s EPA and DHA that are fully vegetarian completely traceable highly bioavailable and grown in a 100 percent scalable and sustainable process according to CEO Miguel Calatayud. He noted Omega-3 is an essential nutrient that represents an exciting market currently dominated by fish and krill. As the demand for omega-3 supplements continues to grow people are starting to look for viable and sustainable alternatives to fish and krill oil. Most people don t know that fish and krill get their omega-3s EPA and DHA from algae. At Qualitas we go directly to the source for the original omega-3s. VITAMIN RETAILER 35 Essential Good Fats through their vital and essential effect but that they counteract the negative effects of omega-6s which is the nutritional plight of Westernized diets. State of the Market The state of the omega-3 market is incredibly good according to Speed. We have seen growth through U.S. Spins data and brands are continuing to innovate and bring to their customers good products that support the many health concerns they face. As the health care experts who drive our food and dietary guidelines continue to realize that omega-3s are the most researched nutrient in history--even compared to most commonly prescribed pharmaceutical drugs--customers are benefiting. They are realizing that omega-3s provide vital and essential benefits and that guidance to eat seafood and or consume omega-3 supplements is Christopher Speed MND vice president of global business development with Wiley s Finest in Ohio said he is also excited to see many non-fish oil based omega-3s on the market. Algae and krill oil provide omega3s EPA and DHA he said. And this is exciting for customers who want other choices. Scientifically the sum total effect of the research suggests that all omegas are significantly important for the future health of our planet and that the primary effect of omega-3s is not just an excellent idea. On a global scale Ellen Schutt communications director of Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega3S (GOED) added that the raw materials market for omega-3s in 2015 was a 1.2 billion market with the U.S. and Europe the largest global markets at 32 percent and 22 percent respectively. China is third at 15 percent and quickly gaining she said. The largest growth though comes from emerging markets including Southeast Asia and South America. Looking at the market in terms of what products these omega-3 oils go dietary supplements are the largest market on a global scale consuming more than half of the oils. Infant formula and fortified foods are high-value categories while pet food consumes more lower cost omega-3 raw materials. Pharmaceutical omega-3 products with low volumes but high values are currently sold in only a few geographies but the potential is very high with more than 30 products under development in the drug discovery pipeline. However one important takeaway is that despite high omega-3 awareness levels 95 percent of Americans do not get enough EPA and DHA to be cardioprotective according to Schutt. So educating the consumer is very important she said. Sales have been steady in the category of EFAs for the Bluebonnet Nutrition line. Weinhardt pointed out that omega-3 global sales are projected to reach 4.96 billion by 2020 according to Industry Experts Global Market Overview. And awareness of omegas as being critical nutrients for physical and mental health is increasing she said. Additionally while there have been some negative reports on fish oil recently these results should be taken with a grain of salt and continuous education should combat any negative effects these have on the market. For instance according to Weinhardt one study published in 2013 reported a statistical association between an increased risk of developing prostate cancer and fish oil consumption (Brasky TM 2013). However she said this association does not imply that fish oil consumption actually causes prostate cancer. Randomized clinical trials are needed in order to demonstrate cause and effect. In fact the choices for probiotic strains are seemingly endless. But what makes a good probiotic strain A Types of Probiotic Strains There are different ways to answer that question. Certainly those probiotic AUGUST 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM strains with human clinical research behind them are vastly preferable to those strains without human research. Beyond that there are a couple of other important considerations. First is that all probiotic strains fall into two general categories residential and transient. Residential strains are those that take up residence in our gut thereby providing ongoing health benefits. Transient strains do not take up residence but as they pass through they still confer one or more benefits. Consequently residential strains are the most important ones. Amongst residential strains (or transient ones for that matter) a vitally important issue is stability. The problem is that most probiotics have a relatively short unstable shelf life. That s why you ll often see many probiotic supplement labels which after identifying the potency (e.g. 1 billion CFU) will include a footnote stating At time of manufacture. This of course means that by the time a consumer uses it the actual potency is likely to be considerably less. Unfortunately this problem continues because even if the stability is adequate on the shelf many probiotic strains are destroyed by stomach acid before they ever reach the gut--and if they do reach the gut the probiotics may be destroyed by bile. Fortunately spore-forming probiotic bacteria can overcome this problem because the spore itself is a protective encasement that allows almost indefinite storage until it is ready to be consumed and can survive transit through the stomach intact.4 One such sporeforming probiotic is called Bacillus coagulans. Research indicates that the spore-like protein coating on B. coagulans allows it to survive stomach acid reach the small intestine germinate and multiply. 5 In addition research has also shown that B. coagulans can tolerate bile allowing it to survive within the small intestine as well.6 Now that we know that B. coagulans will survive the stomach and small intesVITAMIN RETAILER 37 SUPPLEMENTSCIENCE tine for germination let s examine what it does once it gets there--starting with animal research. lans ProDURA may be considered as nonpathogenic and safe for human consumption. Results were that B. coagulans was able to inhibit E. coli and other pathogenic bacteria. In another study 8 B. coagulans reduced lactose intolerance and promoted healthy growth of piglets. Additional research showed that B. coagulans reduced the incidence of infections to provide an alternative to the overuse of antibiotics in animal feed.8 9 Also a study10 of acute and sub-acute oral toxicity of rats fed B. coagulans at progressively higher doses was performed. The growth frenzy between 2002 and 2012 gave birth to an abundance of product offerings. It also gave birth to innovation in concentrations. A steady stream of negative press on omega-3 fish oil began to surface in 2012 which undoubtedly precipitated the cessation of growth frenzy. While thousands of clinical trials linking the consumption of omega-3 EPA and DHA to human health exist and continue to emerge these don t tend to get the media attention she said. But garlic has also been used throughout history for medicinal purposes. In fact gravediggers and priests in 18th century Europe ate garlic as a protection against the plague and in both World Wars garlic was administered to soldiers as an antiseptic agent to inhibit infection. Native to Asia the garlic (Allium sativum) plant comes from the Alliaceae family and is a close relative to chives leeks and onions. A perennial herb that grows to approximately 2 feet garlic s best known healing property is its antibiotic function. One study published in the Pertanika Journal of Tropical Agricultural Science found that garlic extract might be effective against multi-drug resistant strains of pathogenic bacteria associated with urinary tract infections (UTI). Researchers found that 56 percent of 166 bacteria strains isolated from the urine of people with UTI showed a high degree of resistance to antibiotics. However approximately 82 percent of the antibiotic resistant bacteria were susceptible to a crude aqueous extract of Allium sativum. According to the researchers ours is the first study to report the antibacterial activity of aqueous garlic extract against multidrug resistant bacterial isolates from infected urine samples leading to UTI. Another study published in 2014 in PLOS ONE discovered that allicin a chemical found in garlic can kill bacteria that cause life-threatening lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis. Allicin is produced naturally by garlic bulbs to ward off a closely related group of plant pathogens found in soil and water habitats. In the 1980s the bacteria--known as the Burkholderia cepaciacomplex (Bcc)--emerged as a cause of serious and transmissible lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis. Attach your store s business card here and photocopy for your customers. SPORTSNUTRITION By Mark Becker n this day and age of body image muscles and physical performance many look to dietary supplements to satisfy a specific need. Supplements are not just for putting on muscle mass. Endurance athletes truly look to supplements to not only help with training but most importantly recovery. Endurance athletes require a fine balance of strength and endurance which can only be achieved by years of strategic training and dieting. Endurance supplements can and should be an integral part of this balance. Yet what is marketed to runners swimmers and cyclists is a variety of sports drinks power bars and gels that are offered en masse in retailers from coast to coast. All of these things fuel the body during (intra) grueling training sessions or intense competitions but most of them only ensure that the body is able to make it through a competition and nothing more. I have used supplements for more I than three decades and I swear by them. From the basics such as protein and creatine to specialized ingredients the benefits are many and profound. Incorporating a strategic dietary supplement regimen has the following benefits including but not limited to the following Increases endurance and strength Reduces inflammation Improves sleep quality Regulates blood pressure and increases blood flow by dilating arteries Assists the immune system Endurance athletes typically spend hours training. Triathletes typically log 50-60 miles of running per week more than 200 miles a week on the bike and hundreds of laps in the pool. This sheer volume of training as well as a couple of resistance-training sessions per week means that endurance athletes should be paying extremely close attention to their diet and supplemen- tation. Endurance training puts extreme demands on athletes bodies from a physical mental and energy standpoint. As if the time required to train for endurance activities wasn t enough throw in the time required to prep and eat nutrient-dense foods to replenish energy and you quickly run out of hours in the day. Thankfully with the right supplement regimen you can shave time off your prep time boost your performance and recovery and get on your way to crushing your next event. Here s my list of the top supplements endurance athletes should consider among others. These can all be found at your favorite natural products retailers. Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) BCAAs refer to a group of essential amino acids. These include leucine isoleucine and valine. Although amino WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM AUGUST 2017 42 VITAMIN RETAILER acids are the building blocks of protein your body can t actually produce them. As such they must be consumed as part of your daily diet. BCAAs have been shown to have the most benefit in recovery either from muscle damage or fatigue. These are best taken during a workout or as a post-workout drink. Add some electrolytes to assist with hydration. Recently the results from a 94-person double-blind placebo controlled study were published in the scientific journal Food and Nutrition Research (April 2016). The study examined the effect of a unique Flavonoid Root Extract on the thickness of the artery wall using CIMT (carotid intima-media thickness). CIMT is considered a strong indicator of overall cardiovascular and arterial health. Creatine Creatine supplementation and endurance exercise aren t typically linked in the same sentence. We think of creatine in terms of strength speed and power--and for good reason. There are hundreds of published research studies supporting creatine s use as an effective ergogenic aid for improving muscular strength and size. While many will argue creatine has no place in an endurance athlete s supplement regimen that is not necessarily the case. Creatine plays a critical role in the production of energy and the process of building muscle tissue. Creatine can be produced in the body from the amino acids arginine glycine and methionine. However because of the role it plays in creating energy and muscle many athletes use creatine as a performance-enhancing agent. In the body creatine helps to regenerate ADP (spent energy) back into ATP for increased energy output when you re engaged in short intense bursts of energy. If you can look past the direct effects of creatine--an increase in phosphocreatine stores rapid increase in ATP production and improved anaerobic performance--you ll see that creatine supplementation can offer indirect benefits to triathletes and help take their training to the next level. Creatine supplementation has been shown to decrease recovery time during repeated intervals and increase power output at lactate threshold. Improvements in speed power and running economy during your training sessions translates to better race-day performance. BCAAs have been shown to have the most benefit in recovery either from muscle damage or fatigue. These are best taken during a workout or as a post-workout drink. Add some electrolytes to assist with hydration. Following one year of flavonoid root extract consumption mean CIMT total cholesterol LDL levels and blood pressure decreased. This suggests that this ingredient may attenuate the development of oxidation and of related cerebral vascular issues. This extract acts like a nitric oxide (NO) booster supporting increased blood flow and oxygen to the skeletal muscle for increased performance. Furthermore this extract will facilitate the removal of exercise-induced lactic acid build-up which reduces fatigue and recovery time in endurance athletes. through Sigma-tau HealthScience. Two recent studies have demonstrated an increase in blood levels of NO with oral GPLC intake at a daily dosage of 4.5 grams (Bloomer et al. 2007 in press). These findings agree with other recent work using PLC exclusively (Lofreddo et al. 2007) which demonstrated an increase in blood NO in response to 6 grams per day of PLC given via intravenous infusion. NO supplementation can help anyone but it is especially beneficial for people over the age of 40. People under 40 are in their prime physical years. Their muscles cells and tissues are quick and efficient at releasing and producing NO to carry out different bodily processes. NO boosters are not crucial for this demographic. Nonetheless when I was doing triathlons in my prime physical years I would take NO boosters intra-race and would feel a noticeable difference in my energy and endurance. It was truly remarkable. Proteins It wasn t that long ago that protein powders and other sports nutrition supplements were the exclusive territory of bodybuilders and elite athletes. Today the story is quite different. In a matter of a few short years the sports nutrition market has expanded into one that offers fitness and lifestyle support for consumers of every level of athletic ability from triathletes to weekend warriors to senior citizens and beyond. According to U.K.-based market researcher Technavio the American sports nutrition market will surpass 8 billion by 2019 growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 7 percent. Driving this growth Technavio reported is a growing appetite for fitness among the general population paired with the increasing popularity of fitness regimens and programs overall including endurance. But despite an evolving sports nutrition market one constant remains protein is still the category s largest player. Of the total 6.7 billion American sports nutrition market in 2015 according to Euromonitor International protein products (bars powders and ready-to-drink options) are the most popular by far at almost 90 percent of the market. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) humans need to VITAMIN RETAILER 43 Flavonoid Root Flavonoid Root is a breakthrough extract that significantly improves cardiovascular health and the flow of oxygen-rich blood through the arteries. This extract is supported by new science that provides unmatched antioxidant properties and powerful cardiovascular health benefits including increased flow of oxygen-rich blood. AUGUST 2017 WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM Glycine Propionyl-L-Carnitine (GPLC) GPLC consists of a molecular bonded form of propionyl-L-carnitine and one of the carnitine precursor amino acids glycine. It is marketed as GlycoCarn SPORTSNUTRITION get only 10 percent of their daily calories from protein to maintain health. There is reason to believe that runners may need more. Running breaks down muscle proteins and damages muscle fibers and protein is needed for the muscles to recover from the daily onslaught of training. But a study of the diet of elite Kenyan runners found that they got only 10 percent of their daily calories from protein. Given their elite running results it would be difficult to argue that this wasn t enough. Such numbers are deceptive though. It is more helpful to think of protein needs in terms of amounts of protein relative to body weight instead of protein as a percentage of daily calories. That s because running increases total energy--carbohydrate fat and protein--needs. So you may get 10 percent of your daily calories as a non-runner and then continue to get 10 percent of your daily calories as a runner but you re eating more protein as a runner because you re eating more total calories. So how much protein do you need as an amount relative to your body weight 0.5 grams per pound of body weight should do if you train lightly. 0.8 grams per pound of body weight may be needed if you run a lot of miles. There is also science supporting that very high protein intakes help endurance athletes absorb heavy training loads. For example a study at the University of Birmingham England found that cycling time trial performance was reduced less after a period of intensified training when cyclists increased their protein intake to 1.36 grams per pound of body weight at the start of that heavy training block instead of leaving it at 0.68 g lb. In short there seems to be no sweet spot of protein intake that every triathlete has to hit daily. More importantly the amount of protein consumed is the timing of protein intake. Numerous studies have demonstrated that exercise-induced muscle damage is reduced when protein is consumed immediately before and during workouts. Additionally muscle repair happens most rapidly when protein is consumed immediately after workouts. Moving forward the ultimate objective is to arm the consumer athlete with the information they need to make smart retail buying decisions and to provide some insight for the retailer on an endurance athlete s thinking in 44 VITAMIN RETAILER their quest for optimal performance. There are a wide range of sciencebased efficacious dietary supplements and functional foods for endurance athletes of all kinds. I have personally relied heavily on these products during more than 35 years of endurance racing. I can only say that these products not only significantly improved my endurance racing but also my health in general. VR References COTTRELL G. T. COAST J. R. & HERB R. A. (2002). M URRAY ND food allergy or food intolerance occurs when there is an adverse reaction to the ingestion of a food. The distinction between the two terms is that in a classic food allergy the immune system is involved to produce a true allergic reaction to produce more severe symptoms while in a food intolerance symptoms are generally less serious and often limited to digestive problems. A classic food allergy occurs when an ingested food molecule acts as an antigen--a substance that can be bound by an antibody. Antibodies are the protein molecules made by white blood cells that bind to foreign substances--in this case various components of foods. The food antigen is bound by antibodies known as IgE (immunoglobulin E) for immediate allergic reactions and IgG and IgM for delayed allergic reactions. Immediate allergic reactions can be quite serious and potentially life threatening as the IgE and food antigen bind to bind to specialized white blood cells A known as mast cells and basophils to cause the release of histamines which cause swelling and inflammation. In food intolerance the reaction to the food does not involve the immune system unlike a true food allergy. The root cause in most cases of food intolerance is an inability to digest certain foods due to lack of a digestive enzyme. For example approximately 65 percent of adults have a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. Lactose is a sugar in milk and milk products that is broken down by the enzyme lactase produced in the small intestine. If the lactose is not broken down by the enzyme lactase it can produce a lot of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms especially gas bloating cramping pain and diarrhea. Taking a supplemental lactase enzyme can help digest the lactase and allow people with lactose intolerance to eliminate these symptoms of food intolerance. Keep in mind however that many people who are lactose intolerant also have trouble breaking down milk proteins as well. Therefore products that combine lactase with protein digesting enzymes (proteases) are usually a much better choice. Dietary Approaches to Food Allergy and Intolerance There are a variety of dietary approaches to deal with food allergy and or intolerance. For example an allergy elimination diet is one popular method where commonly eaten foods are eliminated and replaced with either hypoallergenic foods and foods that are rarely eaten. The individual stays on the elimination diet for at least one week. If the symptoms are related to food allergy or intolerance sensitivity they will typically disappear by the fifth or sixth day of the diet. If the symptoms do not disappear it is possible that a reaction to a food in the elimination diet is responsible. In that case an even more restricted diet must be utilized. After the eliminationdiet period individual foods are reintroduced every two days. Methods range WWW.VITAMINRETAILER.COM AUGUST 2017 46 VITAMIN RETAILER from reintroducing only a single food every two days to reintroducing a food every one or two meals. Reintroduction of an offending food will typically produce a more severe or recognizable symptom than before allowing for easy identification of a food allergy or intolerance. A popular diet to help deal with common digestive disturbances is the low FODMAP diet. This diet focuses on eliminating certain foods known to cause excessive gas bloating and changes in regularity. FODMAP is an acronym for Fermentable foods that are quickly broken down (fermented) by bacteria in the large intestine Oligosaccharides oligo means few and saccharide means sugar. These molecules are made up of individual sugars joined together in a chain. Beans are a common source of oligosaccharides. Disaccharides di means two sugar so a disaccharide is composed of two sugar molecules bonded together. Sucrose is a disaccharide. Monosaccharides mono means single so a monosaccharide is a single sugar molecule. Fructose is a monosaccharide. Polyols these are sugar alcohols often used as sweeteners. Some examples are xylitol maltitol and erythritol. A low FODMAP diet refers to a temporary eating pattern usually seven to 10 days which has a very low amount of FODMAPs. It is used in clinical medicine to relieve digestion-related symptoms such as gas bloating and irregularity in people dealing with Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-- more on that below Other forms of functional GI disorder (FGID) Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) Certain auto-immune conditions diseases like (potentially) rheumatoid arthritis multiple sclerosis or eczema Fibromyalgia or other health issues you ve noticed are triggered by certain foods Frequent migraines that appear to be triggered after certain meals Here is a list of some common foods and ingredients that are high in FODMAPs. Wheat Bread pasta most breakfast cereals tortillas waffles pancakes crackers biscuits. Other Grains Barley rye. Beverages Beer fortified wines soft drinks with high fructose corn syrup milk soymilk fruit juices. Sweeteners Fructose honey high fructose corn syrup xylitol mannitol maltitol sorbitol. rather than eliminating these foods. One popular method is simply a 14day trial with a high potency digestive enzyme preparation. Ideally one that contains a blend of different variants of the major categories of enzymes with different ranges of pH activation so that the enzymes are effective throughout the entire GI tract. Most digestive enzymes are effective or active within a very narrow pH range and since the pH of the human GI tract varies from very acid to alkaline most enzyme supplements are not effective throughout the entire GI tract. So while an enzyme supplement may be helpful in one part of the digestive system it may be totally inactive in another. Using mixtures of carefully blended enzymes have been shown to work three times stronger and work more than six times faster than leading other enzyme preparations. In the 14-day challenge simply take one or two capsule of the enzyme supplement before each meal for 14 days. Improving digestion via supplemental enzymes is often all that is necessary to eliminate food intolerance. Can Digestive Enzymes Help With Gluten Intolerance Yes products that combine proteases with dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) can help digest gluten. Gluten is the main protein complex primarily found in grains including wheat barley spelt and rye. Many people have an intolerance to gluten along with casein a protein found in milk. When ingested in intolerant individuals these proteins can produce GI discomfort especially gas and bloating. Although the popular solution for gluten and casein intolerance is following a gluten- and casein-free diet and eliminating the offending proteins will reduce discomfort there are often hidden sources of gluten or casein in foods that can still lead to discomfort. Many gluten-free products are available in natural foods stores and even in mainstream supermarkets. Beneficial grains for replacement of gluten sources include amaranth quinoa and a variety of rice such as brown red black and wild rice. Casein is found in milk and dairy products. Obviously when avoiding gluten and casein reading food labels carefully is required. Supplemental digestive enzyme preparations can help people tolerate lower levels of gluten or casein intake Using Digestive Enzyme Supplements in Food Intolerance Not only can digestive enzyme supplementation make the dietary approaches to food intolerance work better in many cases enzyme supplementation may be more useful than dietary changes. For example many of the foods excluded on the low-FODMAP diet produce beneficial effects on the intestinal microbiome--the collection of microbial genetic material in the GI tract. It does not make sense to exclude these healthpromoting foods. A more rational approach may be to focus on supporting FODMAP digestion through the use of supplemental enzyme formulations (Continued on page 50) VITAMIN RETAILER 47 NEWPRODUCTS VR s New Products section is a FREE service to industry members. Gray is the founder and owner of North American Herb and Spice (NAHS) a company specializing in chemical-free wild organic whole-food supplements for the last 30 years. Gray is the author of books on achieving physical emotional and spiritual health including Kids Need Care and The Greatest Treasure of All. Gray and NAHS have donated funds for two Maasai Maas villages to build schools and wells. The company also supports the National Tiger Sanctuary in Saddlebrook MO and many other charitable endeavors. Kenya is the 62nd country that Gray has visited. WITH JANET POVEROMO helped so many people starting with my own family members whose health was seriously compromised. It evolved from there with other Mediterranean spice extracts such as the juice of wild oregano the whole crude wild oregano herb with wild Rhus coriaria wild rosemary extracts and wild sage extracts. Thus I developed the whole food edible herb spice oil category. More recently in keeping with this trend I have introduced wild turmeric and wild ashwagandha extracts. Plus NAHS was the first to bring to the world supplements based on wild chaga. Recently there have been several key innovations notably the creation of the whole food unprocessed hemp extract line Hempanol including Hempanol-CF and Hempanol-PM along with the truly wild turmeric plus hemp extract complex Canacurmin available as sublingual drops. What are the company s philanthropic efforts NAHS s greatest philanthropic effort is the quality and calibre of its supplements which come to the aid of people all over the world. Even so the company has achieved many major milestones in philanthropy including the full support of the National Tiger Sanctuary in Saddlebrook MO the planting of thousands of trees in southern Canada along the Credit River and more recently the creation of schools in Turkey and Africa and the discovery and tapping of water wells for Kenyan Masaai villagers. As well NAHS manages several tree and wilderness set-asides throughout the world for instance in Turkey and Canada keeping the wilderness safe from human encroachment. We also respond quickly when disasters occur with funds and supplement support. Likewise local food banks and shelters are given our aid and support. It is our goal every year to find ways to further a better life and caring for humans and animals at home and across the world wherever the need is most prevalent. We also promote the care of our planet. We ve cleaned trash and dangerous debris out of the forests so the animals can survive and thrive in their environment. We all need to work together to make the world a better place. You are known to be a very frequent traveler. How do you stay healthy during your trips After barely surviving some treacherous wilderness trips I learned if nothing else to always travel with my Oreganol. Not only does it protect against cuts burns bites and wounds it also makes food and water safe to eat and drink anywhere. It s alright to eat and drink the natural forage such as fruits vegetables and meat if desired if you take precautions as I do with GermaClenz spray Oreganol before I eat and HealthBac at bedtime. Poor sanitation is one of the biggest dangers. Further to stay strong and healthy especially while traveling avoid all chemicals junk food sugar and alcohol. Rest well and stay hydrated with clean water. If unsure about cleanliness a few drops of Oreganol will sterilize the germs and kill the parasites. Be very particular about cleanliness or there is a price to pay with exposure to unknown and unusual pathogens. When that happens there is always Oreganol to the rescue. It always works. I end up taking care of everyone on remote trips like the one I just returned from in Africa. Question Answer Judy K. How and why did you start the company How is it evolving It began as a dream and desire to make this world better by creating powerful naturally based whole food supplements. Especially as a master s of science in nutrition I wanted supplements that were effective at supporting health in a dramatic way being dissatisfied with what I had been using from other companies. Then I realized that wild plants growing in undisturbed soil in remote regions were the sources of the most potent natural therapies. Harvesting these I found them effective and started the company. It really got its start when I invented the edible daily use oil of wild oregano. It proved so potent and 52 VITAMIN RETAILER Answer Extra Extra Visit to see a video of Gray on a recent trip to Africa.
